Over the past few years, there has been much debate about the increasing lengths of movies, particularly in relation to big-budget blockbusters. In the past, it was uncommon for award-winning dramas to surpass the two-hour mark, but today, it’s common to find comic book movies lasting 2.5 hours or more.
In my perspective as a supporter, it’s clear that director Gareth Edwards aims to break his pattern with the upcoming “Jurassic World: Rebirth.” You see, his previous major studio releases, such as “Godzilla,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” and “The Creator,” all clock in at over two hours. However, he strived to shorten “Jurassic World: Rebirth” to below the two-hour mark. In an interview with io9, he shared that he trimmed five minutes off the film, but was then requested by the studio to reinstate those minutes back. He said…
In my role as a film critic, I made a conscious decision to create a cinematic experience that lasted less than two hours. Presenting the one hour fifty-nine minute version to the studio, their response was essentially, “Impressive, but could you reinsert the five minutes you trimmed?” Thus, those additional five minutes were reinstated, and in essence, that longer cut became the movie as it is now known.
Rebirth” is officially given as 2 hours and 14 minutes. Given that Edwards’ edit was slightly under two hours, it appears that the runtime without credits was used. This means his version would have exceeded two hours if you included the credits. It’s still a bit shocking that the movie was this short, considering we usually anticipate blockbusters to be longer these days.
In simpler terms, studios tend to prefer shorter films because they can have more screenings, resulting in higher earnings. A few extra minutes might not make a significant difference, but if any scenes were removed, the studio likely believed that the film benefited from their absence.

It’s not entirely certain which specific five minutes of editing by the studio that Edwards referred to as being “saved.” However, the director hinted that when Rebirth is released at home, it might include around two or three scenes that were initially removed and not included in the final cut.
The latest installment of the Jurassic World series is receiving mixed reviews from critics, yet our own review for Jurassic World: Rebirth expresses little admiration. However, the Jurassic Park franchise has consistently raked in substantial profits at the box office, and there’s no reason to anticipate a change in this trend. Despite having the longest runtime of any Jurassic World film (approximately two hours and 30 minutes), Jurassic World: Dominion still grossed a billion dollars. Therefore, it’s likely that the new movie will also be successful financially, even with an additional five minutes in length.
