Scott Thompson won’t be confused with MAGA anytime soon.
During a recent conversation, the humorous figure from Canada took time to criticize President Donald Trump for his comments about Canada being his “51st state.
Even though, Thompson admits, Trump has some points in his Canuck critique.
Despite his political beliefs, the former “Kids in the Hall” member didn’t run out of criticism; instead, he aimed it at an unanticipated recipient.
GLAAD – The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
In his latest solo performance titled “The Last Glory Hole,” Thompson aims his humor at a specific group, using his eccentric Buddy Cole character. He hinted at his reasons during an interview with Metro Weekly last month. This reasoning is rooted in the comedian’s participation in the 2022 revival of “Kids in the Hall.
The Prime Video show came and went without incident, but that wasn’t the case behind the scenes.
Far from it.
In a recent interview with Metro Weekly, he stated that the censorship struggles his comedian friends experienced were likely the most severe they’ve ever had to face.
To his surprise, the censors all hailed from the cultural Left. More specifically? GLAAD.
“I think they should be eliminated.”
According to Thompson, GLAAD and Amazon collaborated to pressure the creators of the series, causing them to eliminate 14 scenes initially planned, with about half of these instances involving the character Buddy Cole.
In simpler terms, “Buddy Cole wasn’t included in the TV show. All my ideas, including seven separate speeches, were turned down.
He shares that Amazon was an incredibly tough ordeal for him. In fact, it might have been the most challenging encounter he’s had within the entertainment industry. The frustration he felt during that time was so intense that he needed several years to pass before he could transform his anger into comedic material.
Comedian Andrew Schulz removed his comedy special “Infamous” from Amazon Prime Video for comparable, suppressive motives.
Here’s how the CBC describes Thompson’s long-running character.
Buddy Cole self-identifies as a versatile performer, hailing from Canada, encompassing roles as an actor, singer, dancer, and model. He’s a sharp, straightforward storyteller who tackles stereotypes, spins outrageous yarns, and offers captivating insights into his unique life journey – all while jokingly criticizing various topics, including his personal sexuality and the LGBTQ+ community to which he belongs.
Thompson found that he needed some time to understand and humorously approach the censorship struggle, which has been a significant factor in shaping his current, solo performance.

Previously, comic actors found censorship was often instigated by conservative perspectives. Today, that seems to be reversed. He contends that if the revived show retained uncensored content, it would have stirred controversy on Prime Video. Yet, he appears open and even welcoming towards potential backlash.
Had we not been restricted by censorship, we could have effectively connected with the younger demographic as planned. Unfortunately, our efforts were significantly hindered, leaving us unable to proceed. This situation saddens me, as I believe we could have handled the negotiations more smoothly.
Now, Thompson’s fans can learn more about the behind-the-scenes battles via his comedy showcase.
More recently, Thompson clarified the absence of political affiliations for the character during an interview with CBC. It’s possible that in this explanation, he also touched upon his comedic perspective.
Buddy Cole is who he perceives himself to be; an independent individual, a human being, not a concept or cause. Being deeply engrossed in a cause can lead one to disregard the people around them, which Buddy chooses to avoid. He doesn’t align with groups because he fears causing disruption, yet acknowledges the importance of his role in comedy. In any other setting, he feels unnecessary.
