Gavin Adcock, a renowned country singer, expresses his disagreement with the categorization of Beyoncé’s Grammy-winning album, “Cowboy Carter,” as a country record. He further states that he feels it is unfair for other artists to battle for chart positions merely because she is Beyoncé.
During a recent concert, Adcock was captured in a widely-shared video stating that he was just three spots ahead on the Apple Music country charts, with Beyoncé being one of the artists ahead of him. He then expressed his doubts about Beyoncé’s latest album, which won the prestigious Album of the Year Grammy, claiming it wasn’t true country music.
He expressed that she has surpassed him on the charts (Beyoncé), saying, “We’re coming for her success.” He added that her style of music isn’t compatible with country music, stating, “It never has been country music, and it won’t be classified as such.
In response to the widespread sharing of his post, Adcock decided to tackle the debate by releasing a subsequent video. On Instagram on Monday, he expressed his viewpoint that the album “Cowboy Carter” shouldn’t be categorized as country music.

As a child, my mother frequently played Beyoncé in the car. I’ve listened to many of her songs, and I recall her Super Bowl Halftime Show being quite impressive years ago. However, I don’t think her album should be categorized as country music,” he asserted. “It doesn’t have a country sound, it doesn’t evoke a country feel, and I don’t think that those who have devoted their lives to this genre and lifestyle should have to contend with or see her album consistently ranking high simply because she’s Beyoncé.
This year’s Academy of Country Music Awards saw Adcock nominated as the New Artist of the Year, while Beyoncé unfortunately didn’t receive any nominations for that particular event.
Beyoncé isn’t new to debates about the classification of her music. Known as “Texas Hold ‘Em”, she openly discussed her motivation behind creating “Cowboy Carter” following instances where she felt excluded from the country music genre previously.
Cowboy Carter was born from a past experience where I didn’t feel included and it was evident that I wasn’t, as she shared on Instagram prior to the album’s release. However, this unwelcoming encounter propelled me to explore deeper into the roots of Country music and learn more about its rich heritage. It’s uplifting to observe how music can bring together people from all over the world while giving a voice to those who have devoted their lives to educating others on our musical legacy.
After Cowboy Carter’s debut, Beyoncé has consistently broken records. Notably, she became the initial Black woman to reach number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. At the Grammys, she garnered her first album of the year award, marked the first time a Black woman won best country album, and earned a country Grammy as the first Black woman in 50 years – all for Cowboy Carter.
