Lanterns Show Will Reportedly Recreate One of Hal Jordan’s Most Defining Moments

As a longtime fan of Green Lantern, I’ve followed this iconic DC Comics character since before I even tuned into Justice League, one of my all-time favorite animated shows. However, it was Geoff Johns’ run on the Green Lantern comic book that truly captivated me as a kid. During this era, Hal Jordan was the central figure, and he quickly became my preferred ring-bearer. With Kyle Chandler set to portray him in the upcoming DC TV series Lanterns, my anticipation has been growing steadily. Now, it’s soaring even higher with rumors suggesting that the DC Universe series could showcase one of Hal Jordan’s most defining character moments.

As reported by Nexus Point News, the characters of Hal Jordan’s parents, Martin and Jessica Jordan, are set to appear in the upcoming series titled Lanterns. Martin Jordan is portrayed as a charismatic yet troubled pilot who conceals profound sorrow within him, and his on-screen demise occurs when Hal is just a boy. Jessica Jordan, Martin’s wife, is depicted as emotionally detached following her husband’s death, with a funeral scene scheduled to showcase this aspect of her character. In the series, we will also encounter a defiant, bold, brave, and rule-breaking adolescent version of Hal Jordan, who emulates his father’s footsteps in multiple scenes.

In the comic books, Hal Jordan’s father, who was a test pilot, met a tragic end when his aircraft malfunctioned and burst into flames. This traumatic event motivated Hal to pursue a career as a test pilot himself, refusing to let fear dictate his life. Later on, while he was flying in his personal plane, Abin Sur, the previous Green Lantern of Sector 2814, chose Hal to take over the role of Green Lantern. Based on this background story, it seems that we might see a resemblance of Martin’s death in the comics to how it was portrayed in the Green Lantern movie.

It’s fitting that the storyline delves into Hal Jordan’s childhood, given that Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will also be experiencing a similar narrative arc. Nicole Ari Parker portrays Berndatte, John Stewart’s mother, while Sherman Augustus plays his father, John Sr., in the present-day timeline. Intriguingly, Jasmine Cephas Jones and J. Alphonse Nicholson have been cast as the younger versions of his parents. I’m excited to see how the series balances exploring our main characters’ pasts while they simultaneously unravel a murder mystery in Nebraska.

In the upcoming episodes of “Lanterns”, we’ll witness Hal, John, and other characters interacting with Nathan Fillion’s character, Guy Gardner – a future Green Lantern making his debut in “Superman” this month, and reappearing in August for “Peacemaker” Season 2. However, it remains uncertain if Guy’s backstory will be explored within “Lanterns”. The series boasts an impressive cast featuring Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Kelly McDonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, and Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, alongside others.

Off-camera, Chris Mundy collaborated with Damon Lindelof and Tom King on the creation of Lanterns. This Green Lantern-centric series is anticipated to debut on HBO around mid-2026, with filming wrapping up in the near future.
