Actress Marisa Abela, a notable figure from the critically-acclaimed British series “Industry”, is now part of the cast alongside Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in Amazon MGM’s revival of the ’80s hit “Highlander”.
Chad Stahelski has agreed to take up directing duties for this upcoming movie, produced under Amazon MGM’s United Artists label. The plan is for it to be shown in cinemas.
In 1986, the film “Highlander” was unveiled, featuring Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Highlander from medieval Scotland who unexpectedly learns he’s an immortal warrior. Guided by Ramirez, portrayed by Sean Connery, a skilled swordsman, the main character, the Highlander, engages in battles against other immortals throughout history. The climax of this epic journey occurs in contemporary times, echoing the famous quote: “there can be only one.” The movie seamlessly moved between different timeframes.
In the remake, Cavill is playing MacLeod while Crowe is Ramirez.
The script currently being penned by Michael Finch deviates somewhat from the original, instead expanding upon a richer and multi-layered universe. It’s rumored that this project is teeming with immortal characters hailing from different regions across the globe.
In the main part, Abela will portray a fresh character – an immortal who is a master of swordsmanship and was once a past lover of MacLeod.
As a gamer, I’m part of an exciting project in the works! Alongside me (Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt), Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis from Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner are joining forces to bring this gaming adventure to life!
Universal Studios (UA) now holds complete ownership of the 1986 original, and they have the opportunity to create a new series as well. For several years, Lionsgate had been working on this project but ultimately transferred the rights to Universal Studios.
The filming process will start in September, and we’ll be capturing scenes in various locations including Scotland, England, and Hong Kong.
Abela has recently been honored with a BAFTA TV award for her outstanding performance in the third season of the acclaimed British banking drama, “Industry”. Furthermore, she managed to outshine heavyweights like Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett in Steven Soderbergh’s 2021 spy thriller, “Black Bag”, which garnered widespread critical praise.
Abela is repped by WME, The Artists Partnership and Sloane Offer.
