The show “Catfish” has provided numerous unexpected and jaw-dropping moments throughout its run, yet not all footage is suitable for broadcast. The program’s impact on popular culture remains undeniable, with terms like “catfishing” being used in shows such as “90 Day Fiancé” to describe individuals who use false identities to find love online. As we eagerly anticipate updates about its potential return to TV schedules in 2025 (or possibly beyond), host Nev Schulman reminisced about one of the rare instances when an entire episode had to be abandoned before it aired.
Schulman appeared as a guest on Josh Peck’s “Good Guys Podcast,” where he mentioned that there were two instances when the show “Catfish” couldn’t broadcast an episode they had filmed. The host provided background information, suggesting that if the episode had ever been aired, it would have been a touching story.
We assist a young man residing with his parents near Boston, and we drive him all the way to Orlando where we encounter the individual in question. Upon meeting, he turns out to be an exceptionally kind and sweet person, though quite large in stature. The fellow from Boston is overjoyed beyond measure…He takes the young man on a memorable date to Disney World. It was touching and heartwarming, truly a delightful experience. I couldn’t wait for this episode to premiere as it beautifully portrayed aspects of these people living in Boston, and offered many intriguing insights.
It’s unfortunate that most Catfish tales don’t have a happy ending, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if one day they could end with a trip to Disney World, enjoying the thrill of the Tron Coaster or any other delightful park attraction? Regrettably, it seems that when your series is inspired by the famous movie, it too must conclude on a melancholic note. Perhaps there’s simply a higher statistical probability for catfish stories to end sadly?
It transpired that the episode itself wasn’t unsuitable for broadcast on MTV. However, Nev Schulman went on to share that the episode was removed following an incident involving one of the participants post-filming.
One time while filming, they informed me that there was an issue with our Boston/Orlando episode. They said it couldn’t be aired. I asked why, and they explained that the young man we had assisted from Boston post-filming but pre-episode airdate, had been apprehended for indecent exposure in a park.
I would have never thought of that ending for the story, even if I had a hundred tries. Nev Schulman didn’t reveal the other reason why the episode was not aired, but it seems unlikely that there is a more surprising explanation than what happened if he chose to tell another story instead.

32 Times A Movie’s Marketing Misdirected The Audience
Schulman pointed out that MTV took down an episode due to legal concerns, and I find it surprising that this hasn’t happened more often on Catfish given its contentious nature. It wouldn’t be unexpected if people who appeared on the show chose not to be on TV again or even pursued legal action against those who catfished them, especially if money was involved. Considering there have only been two episodes removed out of over 200, that seems like a relatively clean record for such a controversial series.
MTV has decided to continue “Catfish” for more seasons, but no dates have been announced yet for when these episodes will be broadcast. Since Kamie Crawford left the series at the end of 2024, it seems they might be looking for a replacement host as the show moves forward into the future. I’m crossing my fingers that we get new episodes soon!
On Hulu, you can stream “Catfish: The TV Show,” offering countless hours of viewing this summer as you follow people’s reactions – whether it’s excitement or disappointment – when they finally meet their online romantic mysteries.
