The latest Xbox job cuts are shockingly poor management, revealing once more the company’s focus on profit and mismanagement. It’s appalling to see such a successful entity like Microsoft resorting to layoffs merely for financial gain, which is deeply disheartening. Suspending games in production is nearly as distressing, particularly when promising titles like Perfect Dark showed great promise.
If Microsoft had chosen not to terminate any employees, we believe that the Perfect Dark reboot could have been ideally suited for Switch 2. Given the strong connection many fans have between classic Rare games and Nintendo, it would have been a fitting decision to port this promising first-person shooter to the hybrid system.
I’m sorry, but unfortunately, that scenario is more akin to a different timeline and seems unlikely to occur during our lifetimes as we know it.
Although Xbox might not be receiving much praise at the moment, Microsoft has been generous in making its games available across various consoles. Soon, Gears of War will be playable on PS5, a surprising turn of events considering it was exclusively an Xbox title back in 2007. Notably, Microsoft has also made efforts to bring games like Cuphead and Ori to the Switch, both of which have been well-received as quality ports on that platform.
It’s possible to contend that making those features available on other consoles might have marked the beginning of Xbox’s decline. Given their emphasis on Game Pass and the “Xbox anywhere” concept, they didn’t feel a strong necessity to maintain exclusivity with their games. However, it was arguably their ineptitude in managing the Xbox One’s unveiling that eventually compelled them to distribute their games across multiple platforms initially.
Independent of past events, there’s broad consensus that Xbox’s partnership with Nintendo was beneficial. The collaboration, which brought games like Cuphead and the Ori series to Switch, has been a smart move, elevating both franchises. This shared success made us imagine that Perfect Dark could indeed thrive on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Because Nintendo’s latest hybrid device packs quite a punch, it’s possible that it could run the Xbox shooter, albeit with some adjustments. Even with these modifications, most enthusiasts wouldn’t likely notice the difference and would still enjoy this FPS on the Switch 2. Given that the system already hosts Borderlands 4 and will accommodate more shooters in the future, it’s not hard to imagine a variety of such games becoming available on the platform.
The blend of nostalgia for the N64 era and the potential power of the Switch 2 would have made “Perfect Dark” an exceptional shooter on the handheld. This could have possibly paved the way for other Rare games to be ported onto the system. Unfortunately, due to Microsoft’s decisions, none of this is likely to occur.
