If you’re not familiar with Sukeban, simply inquire from its enthusiastic followers about what draws them to this popular Japanese female professional wrestling organization that combines wrestling with anime elements, and has seen rapid growth by incorporating manga, fashion, and beauty trends to appeal to a younger demographic.
Currently, Sukeban, a company active in both the U.S. and Japan, is seeking to increase global attention on its girl gang characters and develop fresh ones, through a strategic collaboration with NTT Docomo Studio & Live (NDSL), a joint venture between renowned Japanese telecom company NTT Docomo and talent agency Yoshimoto. This partnership aims to produce Japanese-centric content for international audiences, as partners believe that global audiences are primed to celebrate Sukeban’s creations, given the current high demand for Japanese culture and content, such as anime and manga.
Sukeban’s duet partner, NDSL, boasts a wealth of expertise in areas such as talent nurturing, content dissemination, and managing intellectual properties. This versatile company has collaborated with streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and now brings this know-how to the table.
In this arrangement, revealed on Thursday, Sukeban aims to “share its skill, real-life events, and multi-dimensional content with a global audience” and “enhance its entertainment options for followers by creating fresh intellectual properties and content styles for various platforms.
NDSL expressed great enthusiasm about collaborating with Sukeban, as they aim to share captivating content that showcases unique, vibrant storytelling to global viewers. Furthermore, they mentioned that Sukeban is a rich source of pop culture, blending manga, anime, fashion, music, and beauty, all presented through the intriguing perspective of women’s professional wrestling.
Sukeban highly praises NDSL as “an ideal collaborator,” promising: “Together, we’ll get fans more engaged than ever with Sukeban’s wrestlers, live matches, and the drama and plotlines, no matter where they happen. NDSL excels in creating top-tier content, nurturing talent, and utilizing its resources for expansion, all while maintaining the distinctiveness that makes a brand stand out.
For a while now, Japan has been a hub for women’s wrestling, as its stars have soared from the wrestling arena to fame, cinema, and pop culture. As Sukeban pointed out, legendary wrestlers like Bull Nakano, the Crush Gals, the Beauty Pair, and Dump Matsumoto have left a lasting impact, influencing areas ranging from fashion and toys to anime and music.
Sukeban has set up a wrestling organization in Japan, complete with its own league and brand. The wrestlers are divided into rival factions, each with unique identities and subcultures, and they battle it out for the Sukeban World Championship. Bull Nakano holds the position of commissioner overseeing this league.
The announcement about the strategic partnership has been made recently, following Sukeban’s disclosure that its next Championship Title Fight will take place on July 5, 2025, in Los Angeles during Anime Expo 2025. This event promises an engaging fan experience in collaboration with TikTok. Under this agreement, TikTok will serve as the main sponsor for a series of five matches, with Sareee Bomb, the current World Champion, defending her title against Maya Mamushi, her challenger. The event is also expected to include unique musical performances and unexpected guest appearances.
