In the series TVD, supernatural elements and fantasy played significant roles, yet the central focus was on the characters’ relationships and their romantic entanglements. Fans often debated over Stefan and Elena or Damon and Elena, but these love connections were vital to the storyline. The controversial love triangle may seem outdated now, but it forms the core of TVD. It was the primary plot that underwent a significant shift when Nina Dobrev departed from the show in Season 6.
For six seasons, the writers crafted a captivating will-they-won’t-they dynamic between Elena and the Salvatore brothers in “The Vampire Diaries.” However, there was a more intricate storyline governing everyone’s destiny, particularly Elena’s. Born as a doppelgänger, she possessed magical blood due to her connection to Amara, a shadow self.
Initially, it was assumed that Elena was created using Tatia’s blood in the formation of the Originals, but later, an ancient love triangle involving Silas, Amara, and Qetsiyah was revealed as the origin of not one, but two doppelgänger lines. This plot twist should have also influenced Damon and Elena’s tumultuous romance in “The Vampire Diaries.
The Doppelgängers Were Meant to Be Together
In summary, viewers initially believed that the Petrova line was the sole doppelganger line in existence, with Elena, Katherine, and Tatia being part of it. Since Tatia’s blood was used to create the Originals and their immortality, it seemed logical that her shadow selves were created to maintain a balance. However, the story goes back 2000 years to a time when Silas and Qetsiyah, two powerful witches, fell in love. Qetsiyah invented an elixir that granted eternal life, intending to consume it with Silas. Unbeknownst to her, Silas was secretly involved with his handmaiden, Amara. In the end, when it came time to drink the immortality potion, Silas deceived Qetsiyah and drank it with Amara instead, ensuring his own eternal life. Unfortunately, Qetsiyah’s anger was profound when she learned of this betrayal, and she vowed to torment Amara forever and seal away Silas to desiccate.
In essence, their eternal existence opened a fissure in the natural order, leading to the appearance of the Petrova and Salvatore doubles as a response to their abnormal immortality. By the Season 4 finale, Elena bore an uncanny resemblance to Amara, while Stefan’s visage mirrored Silas, quite unexpectedly. This plotline, which unfolded throughout the story, suggested that the doppelgängers of Silas and Amara were predestined to be together, sparking intrigue among fans about the genuine implications of this connection.
In another world, Stefan and Elena might have lived a completely different life, feeling an extraordinary attraction towards each other despite Elena’s affection for Damon. However, these feelings were actually caused by Markos’ magical enchantment. This intriguing scenario sparked the curiosity of viewers. What if there was a twin soul for each doppelgänger, and they could only fall in love with that specific one? The attraction between Stefan and Elena stemmed from them being shadows of Silas and Amara, but they were born generations apart. According to this hypothesis, they weren’t the perfect pieces of a puzzle; while they fit together, it wasn’t the ideal fit. This was because the doppelgänger intended for Elena wasn’t Stefan, but Tom Avery.
In the fifth season of “The Vampire Diaries”, Tom made an appearance, but his character was short-lived after that. He bore a striking resemblance to Stefan, resided in Atlanta, and spent his days as a dedicated paramedic, saving lives. Unfortunately, Tom’s life was cut short when he stumbled into an age-old supernatural conflict of which he was unaware. Caroline attempted to save him, but Enzo was compelled to break Tom’s neck due to the Travelers threatening Stefan if they didn’t kill Tom – a heartbreaking turn of events. If Tom had survived, fans speculate that he would have eventually crossed paths with Elena, as the doppelgängers were destined to find one another.
Tom and Elena Would Have Been Perfect Partners
In a twist from The Vampire Diaries’ usual narrative, it wasn’t just Damon or Stefan who might have won Elena’s heart; that could have been Tom Avery. It wasn’t by chance that the final doppelgangers of Silas and Amara showed such compassion and concern for humanity. There was an ancient magic at work in this tale, which explained why Tom and Elena shared so many common interests. Elena, who became a doctor in the series finale of TVD, found a striking parallel in real life with Tom Avery, a paramedic who dedicated his days to healing others and saving lives. If viewers found Stefan gentle and loving, they would have been even more touched by Tom’s tender and kind nature. Caroline recognized this noble soul and chose not to kill him, which led Enzo to do the deed instead. Fans can’t help but ponder what might have unfolded had Tom survived.
It’s thought that Stefan and Elena’s inability to be together may have been more influenced by Tom than Damon. Given their similar ages, Elena and Tom were the intended doppelgangers for each other, while Stefan and Katherine were meant to find each other. This theory might also explain why they couldn’t resist each other despite all the deceit between them. Katherine openly acknowledged that Stefan was her true love, and the determined young Salvatore, who was steadfast in his decisions, especially when it came to love, found himself unable to stay away from Katherine. The strong, mysterious connection between Katherine and Stefan could be due to their doppelganger status, suggesting they were destined to find each other in this lifetime. If fans envisioned a series finale with the doppelgangers ending up together, it would likely take an entirely different form.
This Would Have Resulted In an Alternate Finale That Damon and Elena Fans Wouldn’t Have Liked
Tom and Elena didn’t end up together because Enzo disrupted the natural course of events by killing Tom when he should have lived. On the other hand, Katherine and Stefan kept reuniting, ultimately dying together in each other’s arms. However, if the doppelgänger theory is true, it would have been problematic for Damon and Elena fans. The restlessness Elena felt with Stefan was not an attraction to Damon, but rather a cosmic pull towards her doppelgänger soulmate, Tom. Elena may have mistakenly attributed that feeling to Damon, who did stir something in her when she was with Stefan, but he wasn’t the right man for her. If Tom Avery had survived, he would have found a way to meet Elena just as Stefan did. The connection between their doppelgängers was so potent that few things could have prevented them from meeting each other.
In this revised scenario, Tom would’ve arrived at Mystic Falls, leading Elena to finally grasp why she adored Stefan yet felt uneasy around him. All the puzzle pieces would slot into place, allowing her a harmonious relationship with Tom that aligned perfectly with her beliefs and principles. Unlike her past struggles with Damon where she compromised her morals, this alternate ending would give Elena back her power by choosing a human as her soulmate. Since both Tom and Elena were doppelgängers but essentially human, their shared thoughts and personalities could make more sense than the relationship between Elena and Damon. In this reimagined finale, Katherine would’ve found redemption, ending up with Stefan, whom she was destined to be with since the start. However, fans of Damon and Elena might be disheartened as the older Salvatore may have to find his endgame elsewhere (Bonnie is a strong candidate), or he could have sacrificed himself to kill Cade and thwart his plan to torch Mystic Falls.
