One of Netflix’s most popular action series has made a highly anticipated comeback with its new sequel, leaving viewers captivated once more by this blockbuster film franchise. Released in 2020, The Old Guard was well-received by both critics and audiences. Derived from the graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, the series focuses on a band of immortal mercenaries who are pursued by an elite secretive group. However, during their missions, they discover that their immortality may not be as simple as they once believed. The sequel, aptly named The Old Guard 2, has recently been released on Netflix and is rapidly climbing the streaming rankings.
In “The Old Guard 2,” Andy sets out on a quest to find her former teammate who was thought to be dead, while facing off against a new threat that jeopardizes both the immortal beings and mankind. Charlize Theron returns as Andy in this highly-anticipated sequel of “The Old Guard.
Andy and her band of eternal fighters return, more determined than ever in their quest to safeguard the world. However, Booker remains banished following his act of treachery, while Quynh seeks retribution after breaking free from her aquatic jail. Andy now confronts her recent vulnerability as a mortal, as an ominous danger arises that could undo all she’s striven for over millennia. To unravel the enigma of immortality, Andy, Nile, Joe, Nicky, and James Copley reach out to Tuah, an old ally who could hold the answers they need.
The Old Guard 2 is helmed by Victoria Mahoney with a screenplay penned by Sarah L. Walker. Apart from Theron, this sequel features Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Henry Golding, Veronica Ngo, and Kamil Nozynski in key roles. Notably, The Old Guard 2 welcomed back Uma Thurman to the action genre after a long hiatus, having appeared in Kill Bill.
‘The Old Guard’ Fans Aren’t Happy With the Sequel
While The Old Guard 2 may have garnered significant viewership, it’s not considered everlasting by both critics and viewers. The original The Old Guard had a respectable Rotten Tomatoes rating of 80%, along with an equally strong 71% audience score. Unfortunately, its sequel has been met with disapproval from both audiences and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Old Guard 2 currently holds a lowly 28% critic’s score, with a slightly better 44% audience rating.
Fans anticipated that “The Old Guard 2” might kick off a prolonged series of movies. Yet, the film’s underwhelming reviews may have diminished those aspirations. If the sequel manages to attract substantial audiences, it could persuade Netflix to produce a third installment.
