From the debut of Law & Order back in 1990 up until now, there have been numerous alterations within its precinct walls. Switching detectives is almost as routine as resolving cases on a weekly basis, but some collaborations have left lasting impressions and are considered iconic within the world of Law & Order.
As a devoted movie critic, I’ve witnessed my fair share of detective duos, but some have truly left an indelible mark – becoming benchmarks for the shows they grace and the universes they inhabit. With the esteemed Law & Order franchise spanning over three decades, it’s high time we rank the top partner pairings that have captivated audiences worldwide.
10. Nichols and Stevens
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Season 9)
In the final seasons of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, main characters Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) and Robert Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio) departed the show following season 8, along with Mike Logan (Chris Noth) and Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson). Consequently, new characters Zack Nichols (Jeff Goldblum) and Serena Stevens (Saffron Burrows) were introduced in season 8.
Criminal Intent,” there was a lot of cast changes. However, the addition of characters Nichols and Stevens provided a refreshing shift in the series tone. Nichols’ intense and curious style paired well with Stevens’ more relaxed but equally curious demeanor. Unfortunately, they only had one season together on the Major Case Squad, leaving us wishing for more time to see their dynamic grow further.
9. Fontana and Falco
Law & Order (Season 15)
Following Jerry Orbach’s demise, who portrayed the renowned Lenny Briscoe on Law & Order, the show set out to find a suitable successor. Seasoned actor Dennis Farina became part of the cast as Joe Fontana, with everyone hoping for a strong rapport between him and Det. Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin). When Martin temporarily stepped away to finish filming the screen adaptation of Rent, The Sopranos’ actor Michael Imperioli was brought on board during season 15 as Det. Nick Falco in place of him.
Fontana seemed out of place as a senior detective, possibly because viewers weren’t prepared to see anyone else except Briscoe in that role. However, the temporary partnership between Fontana and Falco appeared fitting, as they both employed their hard-boiled city demeanors to crack the most challenging murder cases within the precinct. Farina performed admirably, but it was Imperioli who truly excelled in his role, offering him a refreshing shift from his previous roles on the wrong side of the law.
8. Goren and Eames
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Seasons 1-8, 10)
The primary pair on the show Law & Order: Criminal Intent consisted of Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames, two exceptional detectives known for solving the toughest cases in the Major Case Squad. Goren’s intense and quirky personality complemented Eames’ composed and straightforward style, creating an unbeatable team for eight seasons.
The demanding routine of ‘Law & Order’ led to their separation during the eighth season, only to reunite for the series finale which was met with enthusiasm by fans. Among all the strong duos that appeared on the show, none compared to Goren and Eames.
7. Briscoe and Curtis
Law & Order (Seasons 6-9)
Lenny Briscoe, a notable character on the show “Law & Order,” consistently brought out the best in his colleagues. His partnership with Detective Rey Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) marked a refreshing change from the frequent seriousness and occasional mismatch of his earlier team-up with Mike Logan (Chris Noth).
Briscoe and Curtis displayed outstanding teamwork, as Briscoe’s hard-nosed New York style in cases usually meshed well with Curtis’ generally calm demeanor. Over three seasons, their partnership invigorated the esteemed program, propelling it successfully into the late 1990s.
6. Briscoe and Munch
Law & Order (Season 8, episode 6 | Season 9, episode 14)
Fans adored the unofficial duo of grumpy cops, Briscoe and John Munch (Richard Belzer), more than anything else on Law & Order. They particularly enjoyed watching them solve cases together, appearing in two episodes of Law & Order and one episode of Homicide: Life On The Street. It’s a shame they weren’t paired up officially, as their dynamic made for the ideal team.
As “Homicide” concluded in its seventh season, there was a possibility that Munch might have consistently teamed up with Briscoe, as Benjamin Bratt had signaled he was leaving the show. With Jesse L. Martin already on board, Belzer’s Munch character transitioned to the Law & Order universe on their latest spinoff, “Law & Order: SVU”. From then on, it became history for Munch, but imagine the joy of watching these two banter weekly, solving cases and sharing sandwiches from Carnegie Deli.
5. Lupo and Bernard
Law & Order (Seasons 18-20)
In their final partnership during the original “Law & Order” series, Cyrus Lupo (played by Jeremy Sisto) and Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson) took on the roles similar to Briscoe and Curtis, a duo that proved successful after several seasons of unsuitable partnerships. Lupo, who had previously worked with Ed Green, turned out to be a more fitting character for the show than earlier attempts with Fontana and others, who didn’t last long. Eventually, the pairing of Lupo and Bernard turned out to be the successful formula the show had been searching for.
If “Law & Order” had persisted beyond its 20th season, Lupo and Bernard might have enjoyed a lengthy professional collaboration. However, their relationship was marked by contrasting views that occasionally strained things between them. Yet, as the original series came to an end, their partnership became more dynamic and intimate.
4. Munch and Tutuola
Law & Order: SVU (Seasons 2-9)
Munch teaming up with Detective Odafin “Finn” Tutuola (Ice-T). For seven seasons, Munch and Finn were nearly as dynamic as Benson and Stabler on SVU, with Munch’s grumpy conspiracy theorist style clashing yet complementing Finn’s street-smart, humorous demeanor.
In no other duo on SVU has there been a more fitting match than Munch and Finn. Their combination not only yielded some of the most effective case-solving strategies but also a healthy dose of wit and humor within the corridors of SVU. We truly miss Munch, as well as Richard Belzer, but it’s wonderful to be able to revisit this partnership whenever we desire.
3. Benson and Rollins
Law & Order: SVU (Seasons 13-25)
After Elliot Stabler’s departure from Law & Order: SVU, I, Benson, found myself grappling with the prospect of working with someone new. It wasn’t until the start of season 13 that Amanda Rollins stepped in as my partner. Over the course of 12 seasons, our partnership evolved from a reluctant alliance to one built on respect, mentorship, and a strong bond, both on-screen and off.
Benson and Rollins made a significant and widely discussed impact on “Law & Order: SVU” and the franchise as a whole, marking the first time two female leads were paired together. With Kelli Giddish set to rejoin “Law & Order: SVU” in season 27, we eagerly anticipate seeing these two return to their original dynamic.
2. Briscoe and Green
Law & Order (Seasons 10-14)
Lenny Briscoe was a standout on Law & Order , but it was his partnerships that truly captivated audiences. We adored him alongside Munch and Curtis, but our affection for him reached its peak with Ed Green. For four seasons, the duo functioned seamlessly, delivering an unparalleled pairing for Briscoe and allowing Green to excel in his role as the gentle cop contrasting Briscoe’s more straightforward style.
At the turn of the century, the collaboration between Briscoe and Green significantly revitalized “Law & Order”, attracting more viewers to the series. To date, they remain the most effective team in the show’s history. Following Briscoe’s demise, Green experienced a brief struggle, but his experiences with the legendary detective undeniably refined him. We are fortunate to have shared their extraordinary journey with them.
1. Benson and Stabler
Law & Order: SVU (Seasons 1-12)
In the annals of the Law & Order universe, no partnership has been more influential, insightful, or unparalleled than that between Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson. For a span of 12 seasons in Law & Order: SVU, they established the standard for what makes Law & Order exceptional – a bond between partners who work seamlessly, both personally and professionally, creating an indelible mark on the series and its spin-offs.
Benson’s journey progressed beyond the period of Stabler on SVU, leading her to advance in rank and guide the newest team members within the Special Victims Unit. When Stabler reappeared in the Law & Order series with Organized Crime, it was delightful to witness Benson play a significant role in his new narrative, and to observe their reconnection in a more intense and dramatic context.
