Criminal Minds: Evolution S3—Why Voit’s Redemption Arc Is Totally Fake (And I Can Prove It)

Heads up: Potential spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, episode 9. It seems that the crime drama Criminal Minds: Evolution still has one surprise up its sleeve for its main adversary in the final episodes of season 3. Since the original Criminal Minds series debuted in 2005, there have been numerous chilling unsubs (unknown subjects), but one serial killer has dominated the reboot since 2022 – Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), also known as Sicarius.

Ever since the premiere of “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” Voit has caused nothing but trouble for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. However, it was David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook), and Tyler Green (Ryan-James Hatanaka) who particularly caught his attention. Interestingly enough, since season 3 of “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” Voit has undergone a significant change in personality.

Voit Has Been Reformed In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 With No Indication Of Backsliding

A Traumatic Brain Injury Had An Ironic Side Effect

At the onset of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, the Sicarius killer found himself in a coma following the cliffhanger at the end of season 2. After regaining consciousness, events took a turn for the complex as it was uncovered that Voit had lost all memory of his criminal past and identity.

In season 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, Voit’s complex amnesia gradually lessened, but the killer remained distinctively unique. It was discovered by Dr. Julia Ochoa (played by Aimee Garcia) that following his injury, Voit regained functionality in the empathy center of his brain. This development meant that the psychopathic killer was no longer present. Remarkably, since emerging from his coma, Voit has shown signs of regret and compassion.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3’s Trailer Reveals Voit’s Violence Returns

The Killer’s True Self Returns On A Prison Bus

Despite appearing to have a second chance at life, the latest series “Criminal Minds: Evolution” has sadly sealed Voit’s fate. It seems that his killer instinct may not be completely extinguished yet. Although Voit has shown remorse throughout the season, a trailer for “Criminal Minds: Evolution” Season 3 hints at the Sicarius killer being identified on a prison bus and starting to choke someone.

Although the trailer doesn’t clearly show if Voit is attempting to kill the inmate, it’s evident that he’s causing harm to another person once more. No matter how different Voit’s behavior may seem from his portrayal in season 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, the scene on the prison bus indicates that his violent tendencies (which suggest his psychopathy) are unavoidable.

How Can Criminal Minds: Evolution Explain Voit’s Fake Redemption

Voit May Have An Entirely New Stressor

In the show Criminal Minds: Evolution, unexpected turns and shocking events are common. Therefore, it’s not unanticipated if a significant incident occurs that sets off Voit and rekindles the killer inside him. The Sicarius network and the Disciple could potentially become a source of stress for Voit, overwhelming his empathy and causing his body to respond instinctively with violent actions due to its ingrained muscle memory.

Despite lingering doubts among BAU members about Voit’s amnesia, some suspecting he’s been faking his personality change all season, it’s been proven through brain scans and multiple tests that he genuinely feels empathy. However, as Ochoa pointed out, one cannot fake such results. Yet, the downfall of Voit in the third season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” seems inevitable.
