Warning! This article contains spoilers for Squid Game season 3.
The finale of “Squid Game” season 3 drew mixed reactions from viewers, but the potential fourth season has a chance to learn from past errors and avoid a similarly polarizing response. Since the third season of “Squid Game” debuted on Netflix, many viewers have voiced their dissatisfaction with its conclusion.
Although some appreciate its ongoing element of surprise right up until the end, others wonder if the third season of Squid Game might have had a more satisfying conclusion. Regardless of personal opinions on the ending, it appears that the final arc could use some improvement.
It seems that Squid Game may not have the opportunity to fix these problems as the series has concluded permanently. Yet, the upcoming Netflix follow-up of Squid Game, set to debut later this year, could steer clear of similar narrative pitfalls by studying and learning from the lessons gleaned from the original’s ending mishaps.
Squid Game Season 3’s Ending Mistakes Can Be Lessons For Alice In Borderland’s Final Installment
Like Squid Game, Alice In Borderland Is Ending Its Run With Season 3
Despite wrapping up quite neatly, it came as a surprise when Netflix opted to carry on with more episodes for the second season of “Alice in Borderland,” which debuted on Netflix in December 2020, about eight months before “Squid Game” took off and gained worldwide popularity on the streaming platform.
In contrast, the series “Alice in Borderland” will conclude following “Squid Game,” with its last episode set for release in September 2025. By appearing after the third season of “Squid Game,” the third installment of “Alice in Borderland” can capitalize on learning from the Netflix Korean show’s errors and striving to avoid similar pitfalls.
Because fans were upset that Gi-hun died in Squid Game, the creators of Alice in Borderland might decide to keep Arisu alive during their final storyline, given that viewers have also criticized the sudden and seemingly undeserving deaths of key characters such as Jun-hee and Hyun-ju in the finale of Squid Game.
Since both “Squid Game” and “Alice in Borderland” are known for their unsparing portrayal of character deaths, it’s probable that several key characters from the Japanese manga version will meet their end in the final season. Yet, “Alice in Borderland” could make sure that if some of its cherished main characters perish, they do so with a fitting and emotionally impactful farewell.
Alice In Borderland Season 3 Is At An Even Greater Risk Of Dividing Audiences
It Is Extending Far Beyond Its Source Material
In the same vein as many manga adaptations, Alice in Borderland makes significant changes in seasons 1 and 2. Yet, it manages to preserve the core essence of its source material by incorporating key plot points and character moments. Consequently, the ending of Alice in Borderland season 2 follows a similar trajectory to Haro Aso’s original manga’s final arc.
In its third season, “Alice in Borderland” is venturing well beyond its original source and is daringly creating unique storylines for its conclusion. This move adds an element of unpredictability to the show, which may prove advantageous in numerous aspects as it wraps up on Netflix.
While it’s true that if “Alice in Borderland” season 3 feels like an unwarranted continuation of the original manga’s storyline, many fans might express their disapproval at the series coming back. Fingers crossed, unlike “Squid Game” season 3, the upcoming season of “Alice in Borderland” will be more unifying and consistent with the themes and narrative of its previous episodes.
