The “Trainwreck” series delves into chaotic and disconcerting incidents such as Woodstock ’99, Astroworld, and more recently, the notorious “Trainwreck: Poop Cruise.” On Valentine’s Day 2013, the Carnival Triumph embarked on a voyage to Mexico but encountered an engine fire during the return trip. The situation deteriorated when power failure ensued, taking with it essential services like toilets, making things increasingly unpleasant.
During my viewing of the documentary, there were indeed numerous amusing instances that made me chuckle. However, overall, the experience was undeniably harrowing. If you believe the malfunctioning toilets were the most distressing aspect—well, they certainly ranked high among the unpleasant occurrences, but let me assure you, there were countless other unsettling events on the unfortunate voyage of Carnival Triumph.

The Red Poop Bags
Initially, travelers on the Carnival Triumph were having a wonderful time, socializing, bonding with loved ones, and overall enjoying the voyage. However, things took a turn for the worse when the ship lost power, stranding over 4,000 individuals without functional bathrooms. The problem of where to relieve themselves was partially addressed by instructing passengers to use the shower area, but this left them grappling with the challenge of dealing with their waste. In an unusual response to the situation, Carnival provided red biohazard bags for waste disposal.
Seeing Red
The travelers were all embarrassed by the red trash bags filled with waste, leading some to take anti-diarrhea medication to steer clear of them altogether and others persisting in finding a functional restroom. Regrettably, not everyone managed to control themselves, resulting in numerous instances where the bags were necessary. However, the situation became even more problematic when passengers began tossing their waste bags over the ship’s side, with at least one bag accidentally hitting someone. Despite being unpleasant, it’s important to note that these bags were a less offensive sight compared to the gruesome tale told by Chef Abhi about toilet paper lasagna.

Sewage Overflows
Having spent what felt like an eternity on a drifting cruise ship, the sight of tugboats was a much-needed relief for me as a movie critic aboard the Carnival. As these vessels connected and started exerting their force, the ship tilted precariously, triggering a deluge of unsanitary matter from clogged toilets and showers that flooded the lower decks. The already revolting odor, amplified by the oppressive heat, created a sensory ordeal so potent it leaves me queasy just to recount the experience.
A Hazardous Rescue
Despite the relief that passengers felt at last being safe, the ship suddenly sprung another unpleasant surprise. They had looked forward to returning home, but instead, during the final hour, the Carnival Triumph presented an unexpected and distressing turn of events. The passengers found themselves drenched in their own waste as the ship transformed into a makeshift toilet. Not only did the toilets malfunction, but the entire ship seemed to share the same fate.

Tent City
Due to the air conditioning not working, the passengers were left with few options other than setting up their mattresses on the deck. In doing so, they formed a makeshift “Tent City” with numerous deck chairs and blankets. While it might seem like a fun and exciting scenario, similar to a large sleepover, it’s important to note that this is a sleepover among strangers in the heat, where some have started to form groups and are primarily concerned with their own well-being.
City Strife
In Tent City, the inhabitants rapidly divided into clusters and started amassing supplies. Some of these individuals started engaging in open sexual acts while others engaged in physical altercations. To compound the issue, children were present, making it challenging for their guardians to conceal such behavior. Although no severe incidents occurred, this incident marked a shift where power struggles felt less like an inconvenience and more like a potential risk to existence.

Rotten and Limited Food
On Carnival Triumph, meals were usually a highlight, but that changed when the power failed. This left the chefs in a bind, as they had to salvage what they could while discarding perishable items. Consequently, passengers found themselves queuing for up to two hours to receive soggy sandwiches made of bread, tomatoes, and lettuce. To add insult to injury, an open bar was provided to help people relax, but it led to many passengers becoming overly intoxicated, hungry, and frustrated instead.
Survival Mode
With soggy sandwiches already making things unpleasant, supplies started dwindling, causing people to secretively hoard extra portions. Regrettably, this only intensified the sense of disorder and lawlessness. As Hanna, a bartender aboard the Triumph who hailed from the Soviet Union, aptly stated, “Now these Americans seem to understand what it’s like living in a dictatorship nation, where occurrences like this are expected.

Lack of Signal
As a movie reviewer, I’d rephrase it like this: During my recent cruise aboard the Carnival Triumph, an engine fire left us stranded at sea without cell service. This meant that I, along with countless fellow passengers, were unable to contact our families back on land, causing widespread uncertainty and worry among loved ones. The only glimmer of hope came when another ship appeared on the horizon, sparking a desperate search for any hint of a cell signal. Even then, the news was what ultimately broke the silence, revealing the truth about the engine fire that had trapped us all.
Family Fears
In the documentary, one of the standout tales focused on a 12-year-old girl named Rebekah who embarked on a cruise with her father, Larry, while her mother, Mary, stayed at home. The separation was distressing for both Rebekah and Mary as they were unable to communicate during this time. This incident left Rebekah fearful of losing contact with her mom forever, made Larry feel like he had failed his daughter in some way, and left Mary uncertain about the situation on board and concerned about its severity.

Carnival’s Lack of Accountability
Initially, when Carnival became aware of the predicament onboard the Triumph, their public relations team attempted to minimize the severity of the incident. They provided vague information to the media and later asserted they weren’t liable for the occurrence, citing legal disclaimers in their contracts. However, it was later discovered that several other Carnival cruise ships had experienced similar engine issues. Essentially, the crisis faced by the Carnival Triumph could have been prevented, but instead, Carnival continued to deny any responsibility.
#cruiseshipfromhell
Without CNN and other news outlets, it’s possible that the events onboard the Carnival Triumph may not have been widely known. Social media was also instrumental in spreading the passengers’ experiences, with the hashtag #cruiseshipfromhell becoming popular. As of now, some refunds have been issued, and numerous technical improvements have been made to their fleet. They’ve also revised their disclaimers to make lawsuits more difficult. What stands out most, however, is that they repaired and rebranded the Triumph as the Carnival Sunrise, which seems insensitive given the traumatic experiences of the passengers, their lingering emotional wounds, and the company’s apparent lack of accountability for these events.
