On a Sunday in Paris, Michael Rider unveiled his first collection at CELINE, the renowned French luxury brand where he had spent a decade working under Phoebe Philo’s guidance before becoming its creative director. This event could be seen as a homecoming, with the vibrant display signaling the start of a fresh chapter – characterized by preppy aesthetics, structured designs, elegant eveningwear, and indeed, skinny trousers – following Hedi Slimane’s departure the previous year.

Speaking of CELINE and returning to Paris, specifically 16 rue Vivienne in a transformed world, has stirred deep emotions within me. It’s also been an absolute pleasure, Rider noted – a design veteran who now spearheaded Polo Ralph Lauren’s creative direction. CELINE embodies qualities like excellence, endurance, and elegance, values that are elusive to grasp and even harder to maintain amidst the growing discourse surrounding them.

The collection began by showcasing muted trench coats, jackets, sweaters, and shirts adorned with luxurious gold jewelry such as necklaces and bracelets, amid a blend of business attire and opulence. Later on, bold shades of blue and intense reds appeared in oversized handbags, wide-leg trousers, and branded scarves. Eventually, the focus shifted to more natural hues like greens and aquamarines, dominating sport coats and sweaters designed with an impeccable balance.

Due to the high-end reputation (and expensive cost) of CELINE items, many people consider them as valuable investments rather than everyday purchases. These are the kinds of items that could become cherished pieces in a wardrobe, eventually being passed down through families. This concept of lasting value was what inspired Rider’s vision.
