James Gunn is getting candid about the themes behind his highly anticipated Superman.
In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, the filmmaker and joint CEO of DC Studios discussed the underlying themes of their upcoming superhero movie, considering the present political landscape in the U.S., particularly President Donald Trump’s firm stance on immigration.
Gunn stated that Superman symbolizes the essence of America. It’s about an immigrant who arrived from another land and contributed to our nation, yet for him, it’s primarily a tale emphasizing that fundamental human decency is a virtue and one we seem to have forgotten.
He too conceded that the interpretation of Superman may vary among different political factions and regions, yet he remains indifferent towards any potential backlash or offense caused by the movie.
Indeed, it’s distinct in its playstyle,” Gunn stated. “It revolves around human compassion, and unfortunately, there will be individuals who lack such qualities and might find it objectionable simply due to its theme of kindness. However, let’s not worry about them.
The director noted that although the superhero film, featuring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, deals with political issues, it also delves into themes of moral integrity on a deeper level.
He posed a question: Does one always refrain from killing, like Superman does, or is there a middle ground, as Lois seems to believe? It’s all about their dynamic and how differing views on fundamental moral principles can potentially strain a relationship.
Gunn’s “Superman” story revolves around a young Clark Kent grappling with his dual Kryptonian and human background, all while pursuing a career as a journalist in the city of Metropolis.

In Gunn’s version of “Superman”, we follow the journey of a younger Clark Kent who is trying to balance his alien and human upbringing, and at the same time, works as a reporter in the bustling city of Metropolis.
The director of Guardians of the Galaxy commented on the timing of Superman, saying he appears when people are struggling with a lack of faith in humanity’s kindness. He’s sharing a tale about an exceptionally good character, which seems relevant now because there’s been an increase in harshness due to negative online behavior from cultural figures.
He stated, “I don’t create films with the intention of altering the world, but if my work encourages a handful of people to be a little more compassionate, it would bring me great joy.
Superman hits theaters on July 11.
