In the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Emperor Palpatine employed various strategies to control Anakin Skywalker, but his deceptions about Sith Lord Darth Plagueis were particularly devious. Recognizing that Anakin was motivated by affection and ties, Palpatine exploited these emotions. The love Anakin felt for his mother led him to carry out a horrifying massacre, while his love and dread for his hidden wife, Padmé Amidala, plunged him into darkness.
In a famous scene from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tempts Anakin Skywalker by revealing a secret of the dark side – the ability to use the Force to prevent death. This power seemed like the only hope for Anakin, as he was devastated by visions of Padmé’s impending death and desperately wanted to save her.
Have you ever come across the tale of Master Darth Plagueis, the Wise Sith Lord? The Jedi would not share this story with you; it’s more of a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was an exceptionally powerful and wise Sith master who could manipulate midi-chlorians to create life using the Force. With such vast understanding of the dark side, he even managed to prevent those he cared about from perishing.
Absolutely, it’s clear that Palpatine didn’t genuinely aim to assist Anakin in saving Padmé. Instead, her demise served as a powerful catalyst for Anakin’s anger and fear. These intense emotions stoked his desire for the dark side of the Force, ultimately leading to his metamorphosis into Darth Vader.
In the opera house scene from Revenge of the Sith, it’s not just Palpatine’s deception of Anakin about saving Padmé that catches my attention. Instead, what really disturbs me is the way Palpatine talks about Plagueis’ legacy and the cruelty hidden in his twisted account of it.
There’s One Big Problem With Palpatine’s Plagueis Tale
According to Tumblr user david-talks-sw, it’s quite clear that the Sith are typically indifferent towards people. They are excessively self-centered and driven exclusively by their greed for power. “He could even save those he cared about from dying” is a bold untruth, as a powerful Sith Lord like Darth Plagueis never truly felt concern or empathy for anyone other than themselves.
In essence, it’s a pity that Anakin, overwhelmed by fear of losing Padmé, failed to discern Palpatine’s manipulation. Given his Jedi training and understanding of the Sith, shouldn’t he have recognized that Palpatine, like all Sith, was distorting the truth for self-advantage?
While the Jedi’s rules against attachment might have been overly strict in some instances, they proved particularly accurate with Anakin. Palpatine skillfully exploited Anakin’s attachments. At a crucial moment, all Palpatine needed were some well-chosen, appealing words, and Anakin became entirely manipulable by him.
Palpatine’s Tale Was Half-True, Though
Although Palpatine certainly misrepresented why Plagueis delved into the dark side, there was an element of truth in his elaborate story. In reality, Plagueis was never able to completely evade the natural death of his corporeal form. However, he did uncover the methods for essence transmission, a technique that allowed him to preserve his spirit and awareness by moving them into another body.
In essence, this ability allowed the Sith Lord’s consciousness to endure eternally. Despite possessing immense knowledge, Plagueis unwisely shared this dark side secret with his apprentice, Darth Sidious (also known as Emperor Palpatine). Unfortunately for his Master, Sidious took advantage of this situation and ended up killing him. Later on, using the same method, Sidious managed to survive in numerous cloned bodies, eventually leading to his unexpected reappearance in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker“.
Plagueis might never have figured out a way to achieve immortality within his own body, but he did develop a method to keep what he deeply cherished – himself – alive. Unfortunately for Anakin, this wasn’t the answer he had been seeking. On numerous occasions, Emperor Palpatine revealed his ruthless and malicious nature.
