A 911 for Your Wrist: Porsche Design's New Chronograph 1 "All Black Numbered Edition"

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both virtual and physical world adventures, I must admit that this Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition has caught my eye like never before. Having grown up with the iconic Porsche 911, I’ve always been drawn to anything that carries the Porsche name, and this watch is no exception.

Porsche Design has unveiled the “All Black Numbered Edition” of their Chronograph 1, a contemporary homage to the legendary Chrono I from 1972 designed by F. A. Porsche for the 911. This timepiece blends modern technology with its classic design heritage, catering to both Porsche fans and watch enthusiasts alike, offering them a fashionable and practical wrist companion – a wearable 911.

Much like the Hodinkee x Porsche Design Chronograph 1, this watch is meticulously made at Porsche’s watch manufacturing facility in Solothurn, Switzerland. Notable characteristics of the All Black version include a matte black dial, complete with the current Porsche Design emblem on the crown and clasp. The watch showcases a sevenfold anti-reflective sapphire crystal for excellent readability and is water-resistant to 10 bars. Additionally, it features a sapphire crystal case back that highlights the Porsche Design icon winding rotor.

The design of this timepiece mirrors the cockpit instruments from a Porsche 911, emphasizing both functionality and clarity. Key features include the tachymeter scale, a date display in the distinctive Porsche Design font, and a unique rectangular minute hand with an accurate tip, all reflecting our dedication to quality. The timepiece boasts a 40.8 mm diameter titanium case, coated with black titanium carbide, and offers a power reserve of 48 hours.

In a conversation with TopMob, Ferdi Porsche the head of F.A.T. International and nephew of F.A. Porsche, shared “I find it insane to think this design came out in 1972, it was the first black watch back then. To me, it still looks like you could launch this thing nowadays as a new watch — the timelessness of it is one of the things I find most fascinating. I really love wearing the Chrono 1 because it’s a special watch but it still flies under the radar. It’s an ‘iykyk’ kinda thing and nobody will judge you for wearing a flashy watch. Because of that, it was actually the watch that got me into wearing a watch on a daily basis. Admittedly, because it felt like home wearing it.”

The Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition, which can only be produced up to 1,000 units annually, serves as more than just a watch; it symbolizes Porsche’s rich heritage and exceptional design skill. At the moment of writing, this luxury timepiece, priced at $9,650 USD, is available for order exclusively through the official Porsche Design website.
