Visitors to Epcot‘s French Pavilion at Walt Disney World found themselves in an unexpectedly alarming situation last Saturday evening. A fire erupted in this section of the park, leading to the swift evacuation of everyone from both Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and the adjacent French café. The incident caused some guests to pause their international dining experience, but many were quick to capture the event on their phones instead.
Following the incident, various videos of the fire started appearing online, and it’s undeniable that the footage is quite distressing. The videos shared on social media depict ominous clouds of dark smoke disrupting the picturesque French skyline. On TikTok, @megantooboo captured the scene from Skyline Gondolas in the park at around 7:10 pm on March 22, as she was passing over during the peak of the chaos. Her video distinctly shows the fire’s flames.

This bird’s-eye perspective reveals that the fire started behind the buildings in the backstage area, a fact later verified by authorities. It is said that the cause of the fire was a walk-in cooler, according to reports from the Associated Press and various other sources. The Skyline Gondolas seemed to have the most unobstructed view of the incident. Here’s another video taken by @ryanwmsn on X, filmed from a gondola traveling in the opposite direction.
From above, it can be seen that the flames began at the backstage area situated behind the buildings, which was later confirmed by officials. Rumors point towards the fire starting in a walk-in cooler, as reported by the Associated Press and multiple other news outlets. The Skyline Gondolas appeared to offer the best vantage point for witnessing the event. A video from a gondola moving in the opposite direction, taken by @ryanwmsn on X, provides another angle of the incident.
Although the footage appeared to show heavy smoke, fire officials informed Fox 35 News Orlando that they managed to put out the fire in less than half an hour. However, the video posted by @disneychick1997 on TikTok suggests this wasn’t a minor incident.

What really intensifies the unsettling nature of the video is the stark contrast between its tranquil surroundings and the disturbing event taking place. The sky is serene and clear, a brilliant shade of blue with the setting sun casting a warm, golden glow over everything. Yet, standing in sharp contrast to this peacefulness is the continuous, dark plume of smoke billowing from the French-style square.
In the long-standing story of Epcot, this isn’t the most extreme incident at Disney World. However, a fire should never be taken lightly. Consequently, guests were asked to vacate the vicinity due to safety concerns. Despite efforts by the staff to evacuate the park or at least clear the area around the French Pavilion, some visitors lingered near the fire. This could mean that, despite its appearance, the fire was being managed effectively.
In simpler terms, it’s comforting to know that the fire wasn’t any worse than it was. Considering how many more trees in the French Pavilion could have been engulfed by the flames, and how rapidly they might have spread.
As I pen this review, the exact impact of the recent fire and smoke incident on Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and other Epcot attractions remains uncertain. Therefore, we eagerly await updates to learn more. Personally, I am fervently hoping that the much-admired Pixar classic’s ride, which debuted in October 2021, won’t need an extended closure. The thought of those construction walls returning fills me with dismay. However, above all, my hopes lie in the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved during this unfortunate event.
