As a lifelong fan of Bob Dylan, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing his musical evolution from folk to rock and everything in between. The film, “A Complete Unknown,” has taken me on an emotional journey through his life, showcasing the struggles he faced and the triumphs he achieved along the way. It was particularly fascinating to learn about his performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, a moment that shook the music world and left a lasting impact on the genre of folk music.
As a devoted fan, I can say that I was captivated by how James Mangold’s movie “A Complete Unknown” brought Bob Dylan’s influential career into focus for a new generation. The film masterfully portrays Dylan’s journey from an unknown musician to a renowned singer-songwriter, showcasing some of his most impactful songs and heartfelt performances. Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of the music legend has earned widespread praise and even generated award buzz. His ability to convey the subtleties of Dylan’s character is a testament to his dedication to accuracy and respect in this role. Furthermore, Mangold’s direction and co-writing add depth to the film, bringing to life the story he wanted to tell about one of the greatest musicians in history.
In the movie, Mangold chose to conclude with Dylan’s controversial performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, which wasn’t well-received by folk music enthusiasts. These fans admired and respected Dylan as a folk artist, so when he took the stage with an electric guitar and a blues band, the crowd was far from pleased. In fact, they booed loudly during the performance. This negative response left Dylan feeling frustrated, causing him to perform only a few songs before leaving the stage. The depiction of this event in the film was remarkably accurate, further demonstrating Mangold and Chalamet’s dedication to presenting Dylan’s story truthfully.

Prior to gracing the stage at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan was renowned for his folk music and performances within this genre. The audience anticipated seeing him with an acoustic guitar, yet he surprised them by appearing with an electric guitar and a blues band in tow. Traditional folk music is characterized by instruments such as acoustic guitars, harmonicas, and pianos, so the traditional folk music lovers in attendance weren’t enthused about this shift. Since the festival was named “Folk,” the audience expected the performers to adhere to the genre they had been promised, but Dylan chose to deviate from this expectation. This departure earned him jeers from most of the crowd, but there were others who cheered for their beloved artist.
Based on The Denver Folklore Center’s account, some attendees expressed dissatisfaction over the subpar audio quality of electric instruments, leading to the overshadowing of Dylan’s vocals. Others attributed the boos to Dylan’s brief performance, consisting of just three songs, while other performers had longer set lists. Yet, Mangold implied a feeling of disappointment among the audience due to Dylan shifting his musical style.
After Nearly 40 Years, Bob Dylan Returned to Newport Folk Festival
37 years elapsed since his performance at the festival before Dylan decided to return in 2002, and his comeback at the Newport Folk Festival was highly successful. During this set, which lasted two hours, he played both new and classic songs like “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Girl From the North Country,” and “Summer Days.” The audience responded positively to this performance, indicating that Dylan’s popularity within the “folk” community remained intact. To add an element of surprise, Dylan appeared on stage wearing a cowboy hat, wig, and fake beard.
Since his performance at the folk festival in 2002, Dylan has stayed away from that particular stage. It’s uncertain if he intends to perform there again, but both old and new admirers are eagerly waiting for such a possibility.
Bob Dylan’s Musical Legacy That Transcends Genres
In the movie, we learn that Dylan kicked off his musical journey in folk music but later chose to broaden his creative scope by exploring rock music. Remarkably, he excelled in this new genre too, thanks to his exceptional lyricism. His early performances at folk festivals paved the way for his success and recognition within the folk scene, ultimately altering the genre significantly. Daringly venturing into rock music, a bold move at the time, Dylan also impacted that genre profoundly, leaving an indelible mark on it. Few artists have managed to pull off the feat of seamlessly transitioning between different genres as Dylan did, and many attempts in this direction have fallen short.
