A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro Is Over The Moon About Their Golden Globe Nominations, Despite Getting Snubbed

As a movie critic who has been following the industry for decades and seen countless biopics come and go, I must say that James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” is nothing short of extraordinary. The performances are top-notch, with Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Edward Norton, and the breakout star Monica Barbaro delivering career-defining roles.

James Mangold’s latest Bob Dylan biopic, titled “A Complete Unknown,” has received high praise from critics, with performances from stars like Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, and Edward Norton being singled out. However, it’s newcomer Monica Barbaro who is generating the most buzz. Known for her role as Lt. Natasha ‘Phoenix’ Trace in the 2022 hit “Top Gun: Maverick,” Barbaro’s portrayal of folk singer Joan Baez is being lauded as a breakthrough performance. As awards season approaches, she’s becoming a hot contender for major nominations. Unfortunately, she was overlooked by the Golden Globes, but she seems thrilled about the film’s recognition regardless.

Lately, I had a chat with Monica Barbaro regarding “A Complete Unknown.” Interestingly enough, this conversation took place on the same day that the Golden Globe nominations were revealed. When I inquired about her possibly unusual press day, she shared some insights:

I wondered if the Golden Globe announcements had been made today… So I took a moment to calm down and not get too carried away. After that, I checked my phone and sure enough, there were the results! That’s when I couldn’t help but share the news with everyone, flooding people’s phones with messages.

Looking at the video interview at the beginning of this article, it’s evident that “blowing up people’s phones” wasn’t about lodging complaints, even though she wasn’t specifically called out. The film received a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama, an achievement that everyone associated with it can be proud of. As I mentioned earlier, she was also part of the blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick, and she shared her thoughts on the two experiences, comparing them.

During the production of this film, we weren’t expecting its release to happen this year. Frankly, I wouldn’t have guessed it would be completed so swiftly. To date, I’ve been involved in only one movie that received acclaim from the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. You might know what I’m referring to? However, our film’s recognition came much later than its initial promotion. Therefore, hearing about the announcement on a press day was quite unexpected for me – it’s something I haven’t experienced before.

She’s of course referring to the fact that Top Gun: Maverick was famously delayed due to the global pandemic, so the fact that A Complete Unknown has managed to achieve such a quick turnaround must be an unfamiliar whirlwind. There are talks of a Maverick sequel being in the works, and It’s clear that the cast and crew of Top Gun have remained close, as even Tom Cruise himself made an appearance to support Monica Barbaro for a screening of A Complete Unknown. Barbaro was said to have impressed Cruise and co. with her dedication on set, so we can only assume she’ll be returning to close out the trilogy.

For “A Complete Unknown”, catch it in theaters on Christmas Day! According to TopMob’s review, this film could turn any non-Bob Dylan fan into one, and in my opinion, it’s among the top films of the year. As the year winds down, don’t forget that there are many exciting movies to anticipate for 2025’s box office, so stay tuned here at TopMob for the latest updates.
