In my humble opinion, the success of “Spy” in Statham’s career, surpassing even blockbusters like “The Mechanic: Resurrection,” is undeniable. The commercial triumph of this hilarious spy comedy has yet to find a worthy sequel, which seems quite puzzling indeed.
Jason Statham is primarily recognized for his action-packed roles, starting with his standout performance in the 2002 action movie “The Transporter”. However, some of his most impactful performances have been in secondary roles. For instance, his captivating supporting act in the 2004 thriller “Cellular” and his unforgettable guest appearance in “Collateral”.
Jason Statham’s career took an exhilarating and unforeseen turn with the 2015 spy action comedy film “Spy.” In this movie, he left audiences and critics in stitches with his side-splitting comedic role as Rick Ford, a rugged CIA agent. He formed an uneasy alliance with Susan Cooper, an inexperienced field agent portrayed by Melissa McCarthy, to seize control of a portable nuclear weapon from a ruthless arms dealer. This dynamic duo was on a mission to keep the device out of the wrong hands.
Via Statham’s entirely self-deprecating and humble portrayal, the character Rick Ford transformed into an ingeniously comic persona within the film ‘Spy’, demonstrating that his acting capabilities surpassed what was implied by his continually recurring action roles in blockbuster movies. Furthermore, due to the significant commercial and critical acclaim of ‘Spy’, there was a considerable anticipation for Statham to revive the role of Rick Ford in a potential sequel to the movie.
Although Spy has been the most acclaimed film in Statham’s career during the last ten years, following his roles in sequels like The Expendables, The Mechanic, The Meg, and The Transporter, progress on a Spy sequel has come to a halt. Despite the fact that viewers appear eager for a follow-up, it seems that the studio responsible for Spy is not keen on moving forward with another installment.
Jason Statham Delivers an Excellent Comedic Performance in Spy
Spy was initially conceived as a leading role for Melissa McCarthy, who shines as an unconventional CIA agent named Susan Cooper. Nevertheless, what makes Spy truly remarkable is the outstanding comedic portrayal by Jason Statham in his role as Rick Ford, a hyper-masculine CIA operative. This character’s profound lack of self-awareness leaves one doubting his credibility, as his suave James Bond-like image crumbles under the strain of his sheer idiocy.
During a CIA office meeting, it’s disclosed to Ford that the identities of several high-ranking CIA operatives, including his own, have been exposed to the movie’s secondary antagonist, arms dealer Rayna Boyanov. In response, he requests to undergo a face-swapping procedure using a fictional device reminiscent of the 1997 film “Face/Off,” unaware that such a machine is purely cinematic and non-existent in reality.
In the movie’s continuation, following Susan’s deployment onto the field, Ford, whose self-proclaimed suave spy image is frequently compromised by his questionable disguises, regales Susan with tales of his outrageous espionage escapades. These anecdotes include a daring leap from a skyscraper using nothing but a trench coat as a makeshift parachute and witnessing his girlfriend being pushed from an aircraft, only to be struck mid-air by another plane moments later. As a film enthusiast, I found these accounts both thrilling and slightly unbelievable!
In the film Spy, Statham hilariously and relentlessly pokes fun at the tough-guy persona he’s known for in his action roles over the past 20 years. This playful mockery not only demonstrates his exceptional comedic skills but also showcases that he can deliver laughs just as effectively as he carries a movie franchise on his shoulders.
Spy Effectively Laid the Foundation for Spy 2
Spy, unlike many other films, was intentionally designed to launch a series. It achieved this by introducing Melissa McCarthy’s character, Susan Cooper, as a compelling and relatable underdog heroine, developing her relationship with Jason Statham’s character, Rick Ford, and ultimately hinting at the possibility of their joint mission in Prague.
Back in 2015, when the movie “Spy,” currently boasting a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating, hit the screens, its director and writer, Paul Feig, shared his plans for a sequel, starring McCarthy and Statham. Yet, as of 2019, Feig admitted that despite his continued enthusiasm for making a “Spy” sequel, he hadn’t managed to stir up enough studio-level interest to get the project approved and move forward.
It’s quite surprising that there hasn’t been a sequel to “Spy” in Statham’s career, given that it’s his highest-grossing movie without a follow-up. The first film after “Spy” where Statham appeared and had a sequel was “Mechanic: Resurrection” in 2016, which was the disappointing second part of the 2011 action thriller “The Mechanic.” This sequel earned less than $80 million globally against a production budget of $40 million, while “Spy” ended its run with a worldwide gross of approximately $235 million, more than three times its initial budget of $65 million.
The Kingsman Franchise Made Spy Expendable
It was unfortunate for the new spy action comedy film released by 20th Century Studios that it came out as the second one in this genre within half a year, following the success of “Kingsman: The Secret Service” (2014) which earned more than $410 million globally on a budget of around $85 million. Its sequel, “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” (2017), also surpassed $410 million at the worldwide box office, despite having a production cost slightly over $100 million.
20th Century Studios prioritized the Kingsman film franchise over Spy, as they released the third Kingsman movie, The King’s Man, in 2021, and are currently developing two more Kingsman films titled Kingsman: The Blue Blood and The King’s Man: The Traitor. In contrast, there has been little to no news about a new Spy film for quite some time.
In a 2018 conversation with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused Podcast, filmmaker Paul Feig explained why a Spy sequel hasn’t been produced yet. Regarding the studio’s apparent lack of enthusiasm for producing a Spy sequel, Feig commented:
“They’re currently working on the third Kingsman film. I’m a big fan of the Kingsman series. Their earnings surpassed ours, but we still did well. We made an impressive $235 million globally, considering our budget was only $65 million. However, they hesitated to continue, and now the opportunity might have passed.
