A Fan Fixed The Gladiator 2 Trailer’s Biggest Problem

As a die-hard fan of Ridley Scott’s epic historical films, I was beyond excited when Paramount Pictures finally released the trailer for “Gladiator 2.” However, my initial enthusiasm was quickly dampened by the jarring use of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s contemporary rap song “No Church in the Wild” in the trailer. The juxtaposition of ancient Rome with modern music felt like a creative misstep that took me out of the experience.

As a huge fan of Ridley Scott’s work, I’m excitedly waiting for his latest historical epic to hit the screens. However, there’s one issue that’s been causing a stir among us fans. When Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer for Scott’s much-anticipated “Gladiator” sequel in early July, everyone was wowed by the grandeur and spectacle on display. But some of us felt uneasy about the historical epic vibe, which seemed slightly off. The consensus among fans is that we were put off by an unexpected musical choice – Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild.” For many of us, this contemporary rap song just didn’t sit right with the ancient Roman setting, and the reaction from audiences has been quite pronounced. In fact, the “Gladiator 2” trailer on YouTube has received a massive number of dislikes due to this musical choice.

As a passionate fan, I felt compelled to address the disappointment surrounding the recent creative misstep with the trailer for the upcoming Gladiator sequel. To rectify this issue, YouTube user AD_edits took it upon themselves to make some improvements. They replaced the discordant rap song with Hans Zimmer’s iconic score from the original film, creating a more authentic feel. Furthermore, they re-edited the entire trailer, making it more concise by trimming off approximately a minute of unnecessary shots and scenes. This fan effort features the captivating “Now We Are Free,” one of the most memorable tracks from Gladiator. Although this revised version is not as loud or action-heavy as the official first look, it aligns more closely with our expectations for a Gladiator sequel.

The trailer effectively heightens the sense of nostalgia, an aspect surprisingly missing from the official footage. Unsurprisingly, fans have enthusiastically received the fan-made trailer, commending it for aligning more closely with the tone of the original film.

Fans love the new, fan-fixed Gladiator 2 trailer

As a gamer and video editor, I put my skills to the test when I worked on the “Gladiator 2” YouTube trailer. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with fans raving about how I transformed the original footage into something truly captivating. “@yogendrabijwe” expressed his excitement, stating that my edited version was “better than the actual trailer.” He went on to share how my work “pumped him up for the movie,” a stark contrast to his initial apathy towards the original trailer. @Constellasian also chimed in, expressing her newfound enthusiasm for the sequel after watching my fan remix. Many other fans, like @viskinneriv, couldn’t contain their excitement, writing that they felt as though they had seen the movie already with the original trailer but were now eagerly anticipating the release of the film after watching my re-edited version with the nostalgic Han Zimmer score.

As a fan, I find it intriguing that despite most fans raving about Hans Zimmer’s iconic “Gladiator” score, the composer himself didn’t rejoin Ridley Scott for the sequel. In an interview with Curzon, Zimmer shared that one reason he wasn’t coming back was due to his satisfaction with the first score. He expressed that moving on and not being constantly compared to his previous work appealed to him. Even if he had created an incredible new score, he acknowledged that the music from the original film remains deeply ingrained in people’s memories.

Harry Gregson-Williams, who previously worked as an assistant for Hans Zimmer, is set to compose the music for the upcoming movie. According to Zimmer, who spoke with the media outlet, audiences can look forward to an exciting and powerful musical experience from Williams, as he is confident in his ability to create a worthy successor to the original score.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that starting November 22, I’ll be able to experience the intense action of “Gladiator 2” in theaters. This time around, get ready for historically authentic water battles and the added excitement of sharks! Let’s immerse ourselves in the game-like environment and witness epic gladiatorial combat on the big screen.
