As a child of the ’80s, I can vividly remember the thrill and terror that the original Alien movies brought to my young, impressionable mind. The toys, the posters, the endless discussions about the creature’s origin and its relentless pursuit – it was all so captivating. So, when I heard about Alien: Romulus invading our 2024 movie schedule, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia mixed with a healthy dose of fear.
Is it hard to fathom that we’re almost touching the point where Alien Romulus storms our 2024 cinematic calendar? The past few weeks seem to have whizzed by, especially with those spine-chilling Alien popcorn pails giving us all nightmares. Granted, they might not have disturbed everyone’s dreams; but they were certainly unsettling for me. And when you think everything is back to normal, a French theater converts its entire structure into a Xenomorph! Anyone else feeling like munching on popcorn before the apocalypse arrives?
CGR Cinemas have devised an innovative promotional strategy for director Fede Alvarez’s new venture into the Alien movie series timeline. Just as the Alien 3 teaser hinted that everywhere on Earth, people would hear our screams, this upcoming display will certainly validate that claim:
Let me rephrase that for you in a more casual and engaging manner: Imagine this mind-boggling math/science question: Given the colossal size of the Xenomorph from Alien: Romulus, what would be the size of the Facehugger that initiated its life cycle? Or better yet, how big was the host who gave birth to it? By examining the dimensions of that theater and the footage from Alien: Romulus’ trailers, we can determine that none of those questions actually matter. Instead, what we ought to focus on is whether or not we will be able to get a good night’s sleep after watching this terrifying creature!
It’s a completely reasonable question since the actress Cailee Spaeny was genuinely frightened during additional recording for the movie. Given that Fede Alvarez has a history of horror films like the 2013 remake of “Evil Dead” and the creation of “Don’t Breathe”, it seems plausible that such a terrifying practical nightmare would have a lasting impact on her psyche.
The marketing strategy for Alien: Romulus seems to be particularly appealing to me, as it appears to incorporate a classic approach. This traditional style has naturally carried over into its sales tactics, making it reminiscent of the strategies used to market Aliens back in the ’80s, with merchandise serving as an enticement for kids who weren’t old enough to watch the movie according to the MPAA standards. So, while there may be modern popcorn buckets available, they function similarly to the toys that once captivated young audiences of the original Aliens.
Today’s youth are encountering thrilling previews for a film their elders might not attend themselves, but may still request the younger ones to do so. This realization is at once chilling and heartwarming, leaving me eager to brave Alien: Romulus.
Soon, everyone will have their chance to experience it, as the cinematic experience gets closer to its audience starting from early screenings on Thursday. Make sure you’re ready for this adventure by subscribing to Hulu, since the initial three Alien films can be found streaming there at present.
