As a seasoned Friends enthusiast who’s clocked in well over a thousand hours of rewatching this iconic sitcom, I can’t help but feel both elated and slightly anxious about the upcoming game show Fast Friends. On one hand, the prospect of seeing fellow fans compete in a trivia battle reminiscent of Monica vs Rachel and Chandler vs Joey is exhilarating. The thought of reliving those classic moments, especially the unforgettable B-plot from “The One with the Embryos,” makes my heart race faster than Ross’s infamous dinosaur run!
On September 22nd, it was thirty years since Friends first aired on NBC, and fans have been sharing their excitement all over social media. Known as one of the most binge-worthy TV shows in history, it’s no wonder that fans are so passionate about this beloved sitcom, which spanned ten seasons. In light of this, the powers-that-be at Max have decided to create a new game show for diehard Friends enthusiasts to compete against each other. As a devoted fan myself, I can only hope that they include a classic trivia contest featuring Monica and Rachel versus Chandler and Joey in the upcoming program.
Kick off filming next month at The Friends Experience: The One in New York City, where Fast Friends will pit teams of die-hard fans against each other, vying for the honor of being crowned Ultimate Friends Fan. Over four episodes, the teams will engage in a variety of challenges, puzzles, and, of course, trivia contests designed to test their mastery of one of TV’s most beloved sitcoms. The team that finishes all tasks and answers all questions fastest will emerge victorious.
It’s thrilling to learn that the game show offers contestants an opportunity to relive some famous scenes from its history, perhaps even featuring memorable moments like Monica and Chandler’s best acts. I sincerely hope the experience goes beyond just walking onto recreated sets and ordering a coffee at Central Perk. Given there are over 200 episodes available, producers could design exclusive challenges and quiz questions tailored to test this group of competitors effectively.
As a die-hard fan myself, I can think of a handful of different puzzles and questions I’d use if I were in charge of organizing a Friends-themed trivial game. At the top of that list is finding a way to recreate the epic trivia battle from Season 4, Episode 12.
If you’re not as big a fan as I am, let me explain: In one of my favorite Friends episodes titled “The One with the Embryos,” we find ourselves focusing on a subplot. Here, Monica, who is quite competitive, persuades Rachel to participate in a trivia game against Chandler and Joey, where the questioner is ‘who knows who best’. Initially, this is just a friendly $100 wager among friends. However, things soon become heated as they progress into a rapid-fire round moderated by Ross to settle the tie. Monica escalates the stakes further: if the ladies win, the men have to give up their pets, but if the guys win, they get to move into the women’s apartment.
In this amusing scenario, the four sets of friends are bantering loudly, talking over one another, as Ross meticulously presents a variety of questions from four distinct areas, like “preferences and hobbies” and “comparative relations.
David Schwimmer was taken aback when he found out about Matthew Perry’s opinion on his acting.
The setup for this game show, reminiscent of “Friends,” is nearly ideal given that they’re engaging in a trivia contest themselves. What makes it even more appealing is its ease of execution. The entire production unfolds within the iconic purple apartment, which is an interactive location in NYC, reducing the need for significant changes to the set. Moreover, the trivia categories could remain largely unaltered, and some questions might even be reusable if the producers aim to provide a genuine experience of “re-living their favorite moments.
If the four-part contest fails to include a scenario similar to the one described, I must admit, I’d be genuinely let down. On the flip side, if such a scene is included, it could very well turn into one of the most exceptional TV game shows ever – at least, as far as my personal opinion goes.
Unfortunately, “Fast Friends” won’t be streamable for a while, but fans can currently watch all ten seasons of the original “FRIENDS” series with an active Max subscription. Not only has the streaming service made it effortless by creating a dedicated collection page for the show, but they’ve also included playlists highlighting the best episodes for each character as well as ones featuring episodes with celebrity guests. For those who can’t get enough, there’s even additional hours of bonus content available, such as discussions with the creative team about their experience creating the sitcom 30 years ago.
