As a gamer with a deep passion for architecture and design, I must say that stepping into Jean Prouvé‘s “Carnac” house at Design Miami.Paris was nothing short of breathtaking. The blend of functionality, elegance, and innovation is truly a testament to Prouvé’s genius.
A Jean Prouvé-designed home was set up in Paris during the Design Miami.Paris event.
Under the supervision of Laffanour Galerie Downtown, the setup showcases one of Jean Prouvé’s renowned demountable houses known as “Carnac”. This design, originally created in 1946, was initially built for his family as a summer vacation home.
As a devoted admirer, I’d express it this way: “This house showcases Prouvé’s unique ability to blend practicality and aesthetic grace in a portable, space-saving design. It stands as a powerful reminder of his visionary perspective on architecture, an iconic emblem of cutting-edge thinking in contemporary living environments.

Originally crafted for M. Prouvé personally, numerous detachable constructions like these were actually devised to address the housing crisis faced by individuals displaced during World War II.
The components were delivered to villages located in Lorraine, France. These parts could be quickly set up and torn down, requiring just two people working a day to finish them. Due to scarcity of steel during that period, most of the structure was made of wood and fitted into a metal framework.
Currently, during the public events at Design Miami.Paris (which coincides with the Art Basel fair), Laffanour Galerie Downtown is allowing visitors to step inside Jean Prouvé’s summer house, nestled within the gardens of Hôtel de Maisons. The interior has been primarily decorated with Prouvé furniture, but you’ll also find pieces designed by Charlotte Perriand.
Design Miami. Paris is on show until October 20. Find out more here.
