As someone who has always been captivated by true crime stories and their adaptations for the small screen, I must say that the second season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has certainly sparked a lot of conversation. Being a long-time fan of such narratives, I find myself drawn to the complexities and controversies they invariably stir up – which is exactly what this season has done.
The second season of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” has debuted within Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, “Monster,” as part of the 2024 TV lineup. Predictably, this new season has sparked a lot of discussion, not only from critics and ordinary viewers, but also directly from one of the main subjects – Erik Menendez – through his wife Tammi. In an outspoken manner, Erik voiced his thoughts on Murphy’s portrayal of their stories. This revelation aligns with Kim Kardashian’s recent prison visit to meet the brothers.
What Did Erik Menendez Have To Say About Ryan Murphy’s Monsters?
In 1996, Erik and Lyle Menéndez were found guilty of murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez. The most recent season of Ryan Murphy’s show (which can be streamed with a Netflix subscription) delves into the murders as well as the subsequent legal proceedings. On the day that the nine episodes premiered, Tammi, who has been married to Erik since 1999, shared her husband’s thoughts on the show with X. The 53-year-old convicted murderer expressed his dislike for the drama series.
In simpler terms, it seems like you’re saying that you feel Ryan Murphy intentionally distorted the truth about Lyle in his show, creating a negative caricature based on blatant lies. You believe he couldn’t be unaware or inaccurate about the facts of your lives to such an extent, so it appears he did this with ill intent. Putting it more casually, you think Ryan Murphy knowingly twisted the truth about Lyle in his show for a bad reason.
Erik Menéndez criticized Netflix for presenting an inaccurate depiction of the events surrounding his crime’s aftermath. He also contended that the show perpetuated a misleading narrative, suggesting that males are not subjected to sexual abuse or do not react to it in the same way women do. In essence, he maintained that the miniseries undermined the accounts of men who have bravely spoken out about their experiences with abuse.
Following his statement that Ryan Murphy constructs his disturbing storylines using repugnant and revolting character depictions, Mr. Menéndez expanded on his views as detailed in the following post:
On previous occasions, Monster has encountered criticism from people associated with real-life stories it has portrayed. For example, during Season 1, which delved into the murders carried out by Jeffrey Dahmer, there was substantial backlash. A friend of one of Dahmer’s victims publicly criticized Ryan Murphy, accusing him of seeking attention through the media. Furthermore, some individuals, such as the sister of one of Dahmer’s victims, alleged that they were not approached to offer consultation on the show. However, Murphy asserted that he had attempted to obtain feedback from the families who were affected by these events.
Currently, the producer of American Horror Story remains silent regarding the statements made by Tammi Menéndez. However, during this period, one of his associates, Kim Kardashian, has kept herself quite occupied.
Why Did Kim Kardahian Visit The Menendez Siblings?
Over the weekend, following Tammi Menéndez’s post, Kim Kardashian visited Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. According to TMZ, she journeyed to this facility located close to San Diego for talks on prison reform with Lyle, Erik, and other inmates. As reported by the news outlet, the influential figure interacted with approximately 40 inmates at the end of her visit.
She was also reportedly accompanied by her mother, Kris Jenner, sister Khloe Kardashian as well as film producer Scott Budnick and actor Cooper Koch – who plays Erik on Monsters. Photos of her return to LA from the facility were also shared by deuxmoi on Instagram.
Kim Kardashian, currently studying law, has been dedicated to changing the criminal justice system for quite some time. She even collaborated with former President Donald Trump (who once ended their conversation abruptly) in this endeavor while he was in office. In her most recent prison visit, it’s said she spoke about a reform project called Greenspace, which the Menéndez brothers are associated with to some degree.
Personally, when Kardashians’ star dropped by and Tammi Menéndez shared her husband’s thoughts, it definitely shone a brighter light on Monsters. Whether we’ll see more folks talking up the anthology series – good or bad – is still up in the air.
