The casting process for “The Hunger Games: Sunrise at the Reaping” has officially begun, stirring even more anticipation for this highly-anticipated book-to-screen adaptation. Earlier this week, we learned who will portray Haymitch and Lenore Dove Baird, and now we’ve got news about another District 12 tribute, Maysilee Donner, and her actor!
McKenna Grace, well-known for her portrayal of Phoebe Spengler in the latest Ghostbusters films, has been officially chosen to step into a role significantly linked to our beloved first Hunger Games heroine, Katniss. She will be the first tribute to sport the Mockingjay brooch!

18-year-old actor has been added to the cast alongside Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird in the upcoming movie “Sunrise on the Reaping,” which is set to release in 2026. In this production, she will portray another District 12 tribute during the second Quarter Quell event where four tributes are selected from each district rather than the usual two.
In addition to Haymitch, Wyatt Callow, Louella McCoy, and Maysilee Donner are selected to participate in the games that hail from the district where Katniss is famously chosen for the 74th Hunger Games. She has a sister named Merrilee and is particularly close with Asterid Everdeen, Katniss’s mother. The mockingjay pin that Katniss wears was originally owned by her, long before it became a symbol of rebellion.
1) It’s somewhat unexpected that Maysilee, one of District 12’s wealthier children, was selected for the games, considering she probably had good fortune on her side. Reading the book, I can definitely picture Grace navigating the delicate balance between portraying Maysilee’s intricacies – her flaws that make her a complex character, and as described in the book, “the snobbish girl in town” – yet still endearing to the audience.
McKenna Grace truly shines in the recent “Ghostbusters” films, demonstrating an incredible range of emotions. For a change, Maysilee is a distinct role from Phoebe, yet I’m confident that Grace will bring it to life convincingly.
