It’s tough to deny that the Star Wars franchise under Disney has faced some challenges. The sequel trilogy received varied criticism, but it was an undisputed box office sensation, with each film earning over a billion dollars worldwide. Even today, The Force Awakens remains the highest-grossing domestic movie of all time, surpassing even Avengers: Endgame.
However, following the debut of these movies, the franchise has faced several challenges. Kathleen Kennedy, as the studio head, has borne the brunt of the criticism that’s been leveled at it. Though Disney seems content with her work, many fans have expressed dissatisfaction. If a recent rumor from Lucasfilm is to be believed, these disgruntled fans will soon find cause for celebration.
Kathleen Kennedy May Be Leaving Lucasfilm
According to recent reports by Puck, there are whispers within Kathleen Kennedy’s close circle that she may be departing from Lucasfilm at the end of this year. It’s important to note that no official announcement has been made yet, so this information should be regarded as a rumor for now. However, Puck claims to have several reliable sources backing up this potential departure.
It’s hard to deny that the intellectual property created by George Lucas, specifically Star Wars, has faced its share of challenges. Several new Star Wars films that were planned in recent years have yet to be produced. Consequently, it’s been six years since a Star Wars film was released in theaters, which isn’t an accidental gap in the schedule. There have undeniably been issues within the company owned by Disney.
As the leader of Lucasfilm, Kennedy holds the final say on the Star Wars franchise, including its successes and setbacks. For those fans who have long been vocal about wanting her to resign and have targeted women involved in Star Wars with harassment, this development will likely be viewed as a positive move. However, I must admit, I’m not overly enthused by the news.
Kathleen Kennedy Leaving Lucasfilm May Make Star Wars Far More Boring
With Kennedy reportedly resigning, the main query arises as to who will take her place. Among the potential candidates, Dave Filoni stands out, given his current position as chief creative officer at Lucasfilm. He is also well-liked by the Star Wars fanbase, and arguably, a rather unremarkable selection could be made in this instance.
Although I appreciate Filoni’s work on Star Wars, it often appears to be built on fan service, with Easter eggs being a significant part. While these can be enjoyable, they aren’t enough to carry the franchise alone. However, they do manage to excite fans, which has led to their ongoing use. Referencing past, more successful films for the sake of excitement in this new chapter isn’t a sustainable strategy for the long term.
In my opinion, I found the latest entries to the Star Wars universe, “The Acolyte” and “Skeleton Crew,” more captivating than “Ahsoka” or the recent installments of “The Mandalorian.” This is because these new shows broadened the scope of what Star Wars as a franchise can encompass. They are available for streaming with a Disney+ subscription.
Without Kathleen Kennedy, fans may still encounter intriguing and innovative concepts, but if we stick solely to producing films and series that heavily rely on references to previous trilogies, it won’t be engaging. This approach, unfortunately, is often seen as a sign of creative exhaustion – a tactic Disney resorts to when they run out of fresh ideas.
Kathleen Kennedy is renowned as one of Hollywood’s most successful producers, with her work on films like ‘Star Wars,’ she has demonstrated her exceptional skills and has certainly earned the right to retire. If she does decide to step down, I wish her all the best. The person taking over will undoubtedly benefit from learning under Kennedy’s tutelage.
