As a gamer with a soft spot for heartfelt narratives, I must say that “A Man on the Inside” has undeniably stolen my heart. The emotional depth and raw performances, particularly in Episode 5 featuring Ted Danson and Susan Ruttan, have left me spellbound.
Below are spoilers for the first few episodes of A Man on the Inside on Netflix. If you still need to catch up with the series, you can check out all eight episodes with a Netflix subscription right now.
This year’s lineup on Netflix in 2024 has provided us with numerous new shows, but among my favorites is “A Man on the Inside,” a series from Michael Schur. A specific scene between lead actor Ted Danson and co-star Susan Ruttan in this show left me in tears for several minutes. Fortunately, I had the chance to interview Danson, who shared the emotional backstory behind that scene in Episode 5.
The film “A Man on the Inside” draws inspiration from the documentary “The Mole Agent,” and it centers around an elderly man hired to uncover the theft of a valuable necklace within a retirement home. While carrying out his investigation, he encounters Gladys, a resident grappling with early dementia, whose condition worsens progressively over time.>
In Episode 5 of the series, Charles and Gladys share numerous moments on screen, making it particularly moving as Charles’ wife also succumbed to the same illness. During an interview about this episode and the filming process for these emotional scenes, Danson shared that he had personal experience with a family member battling the same disease.
My father had early Alzheimer’s, but everybody’s experience with that is different.
He went on to tell me that while he did have that experience, it was working with Rattan that made that episode all the more remarkable, especially the scene where Gladys becomes frightened because she can’t recall where she is:
In discussing the filming, I want to emphasize how remarkable Susan Ruttan was in her role, given that she needed to be authentic in every moment. If she hadn’t been, viewers might have thought, “I’m not buying this. It doesn’t ring true.” They would have felt deceived, sensing manipulation. Instead, Susan was so real that it felt like we were living the scene together. I didn’t need to act; I just needed to be with Susan Ruttan.
“A Man on the Inside” is proving to be a triumph for creators Schur and Danson, and it’s currently leading Netflix’s television rankings. The creator himself has expressed his deep enthusiasm for the series; they are eager to produce a Season 2 that delves deeper into Charles’ tale of being an exceptional (albeit somewhat unrefined) spy.
In my conversation with Danson, it’s clear that the show isn’t solely focused on espionage, despite being an exceptional spy series. Instead, its core lies in the emotional journey of finding family when life seems to have taken so much away. This is what makes the community at Charles’ surveillance retirement home so heartwarming and compelling. Gladys was one of many characters who left a deep impression on the protagonist, as well as myself and the viewing audience.
Given that Charles is likely to embark on a fresh assignment in a different location, it seems unlikely that we will encounter Gladys again. This isn’t like the cast of “The Good Place,” who appear consistently throughout each season. Nevertheless, I’m content with this arrangement.
Listening to the backstory of Danson and Ruttan’s filming process added a unique charm to those particular scenes, deepening my affection for the series even further, and I eagerly anticipate where the show will take me emotionally next.
