‘A Minecraft Movie’ Breaks Box Office Opening Weekend Record With $157 Million USD

The “Minecraft” movie has broken records by earning a staggering $157 million during its first weekend at the box office, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend of 2023 and setting a new benchmark for the performance of movies based on video games.

The movie jointly produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, featuring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, was anticipated to earn around $70-$80 million in the U.S., but ended up making nearly $90 million instead. Additionally, it made an extra $144 million internationally, bringing its worldwide opening total to approximately $301 million. The film had a production budget of $150 million, not including marketing costs, meaning it’s already on track to make a profit.

The movie version of a popular video game exceeded the expected earnings of Universal and Illumination’s 2024 blockbuster, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which made $146 million USD. Known as one of the best-selling video games ever, “A Minecraft Movie” outperformed at the box office over the weekend, surpassing the earnings of Jason Statham’s action thriller “A Working Man” and Disney’s “Snow White.
