A New, Even Shorter Version of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Is Headed to Broadway

As a seasoned gamer of both the wizarding world and the Broadway stage, I must say, the announcement of a shorter version of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” has me bewitched and bewildered! Having sat through countless hours of epic quests in MMORPGs and watched every minute of the original production, I can attest that the three-hour mark is a sweet spot for immersive storytelling.

In just a few short months, come November, I’ll be able to step into the world of magic as I witness the abridged adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” unfold on the grand stage of Broadway!

Instead of the present play lasting three and a half hours, the upcoming revised version will be completed in less than three hours, including intermission. This abridged edition is set to debut on Broadway when fresh actors assume roles at Lyric Theatre from November 12, 2024.

For the second time, the play has been abridged during its run on Broadway. The initial presentation, debuted on Broadway in April 2018, consisted of two sections that together lasted for a grand total of five hours and fifteen minutes.

After theaters reopened on Broadway following the pandemic-induced shutdown, I found myself watching a three-and-a-half hour one-act play. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender mentioned that bringing back such an extensive production was challenging due to factors like commercial hurdles and decreased tourism because of the pandemic. Given the sluggish return of audiences, a two-part show might have been too much for us. Interestingly, the West End version of the play is still in two parts.

The play titled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is penned by Jack Thorne and directed by John Tiffany. This work is derived from an original story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany themselves. The plot unfolds 19 years after the occurrences depicted in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, focusing on Harry Potter’s son, Albus Severus Potter, who starts his journey at Hogwarts. Here, he develops a friendship with Scorpius Malfoy, the offspring of Harry’s former rival.

The initial Broadway performance earned six Tony Awards, with accolades for best play, and it’s famed for its impressive stage design and special effects. Since 2022, ticket sales have experienced ups and downs, but the production frequently earns or surpasses $1 million per week.

The new version of the show had its world premiere in Chicago last month.

Since its initial debut in London in 2016, the creative team behind Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been striving to push boundaries and find fresh, groundbreaking ways to present this captivating story on stage. This innovative approach has persisted as the show has spread worldwide, continually adapting and growing. Friedman and Callender revealed that John Tiffany, Jack Thorne, and the original creative team recently reunited to reexamine and refine the source material, resulting in a condensed three-hour version of the show, tailored for Broadway. They are overjoyed to announce this revised edition will be opening at the Lyric Theatre soon. The premiere in Chicago last month was met with immense acclaim, and they eagerly anticipate witnessing their exceptional new cast breathe life into it on stage in New York come November.

In the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Steven Hoggett handles the choreography, Christine Jones designs the sets, Katrina Lindsay creates the costumes, Imogen Heap composes the music and makes the arrangements, Neil Austin takes care of the lighting, Gareth Fry manages the sound effects, Jamie Harrison specializes in illusions and magic, while Martin Lowe supervises and arranges the music.
