A New Resident Evil Movie May Be Coming From Barbarian’s Zach Cregger

As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of experiencing various genres and sub-genres under my belt, I must say that the Resident Evil franchise has always held a special place in my heart. While not universally praised by critics, these action-packed horror films have undeniably captured the imagination of countless fans, myself included.

Although Resident Evil movies may not receive favorable reviews from critics, they have undeniably been successful with fans, particularly those directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Many believe the original one to be the best, yet all installments offer something enjoyable. The storyline concluded under his direction, but the franchise continues to live on. As a reboot of the film series separate from Anderson’s universe, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, was introduced. This latest installment, which combined elements from the first two games into one movie, received less than positive responses. However, a mid-credits scene hinted at a sequel, and there’s news that a new director is now involved with the film franchise.

As per Jeff Sneider’s report, director Zach Cregger, who has recently made a mark with his work on the hit horror movie ‘Barbarian’, might be joining the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise. Previously, he was slated to direct Sony’s ‘Clue’ film, but that seems unlikely now. If he does take on this project, Cregger would undoubtedly be a great fit for the ‘Resident Evil’ universe. His past work shows that he has a knack for horror and can effectively incorporate humor when necessary. However, it remains unclear whether Cregger’s potential film will serve as another reboot or continue from where the last one ended.

Remember to approach such rumors with a bit of skepticism, as there’s usually some uncertainty involved in whether they will actually happen. As of now, Cregger’s upcoming film titled “Weapons” featuring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner is set for release on January 16, 2026. Apart from these, he currently has two other films where he serves as a producer, but his schedule beyond that remains flexible, potentially open for projects like “Resident Evil” or any other that might come his way.

What Does the Future of Resident Evil Look Like?

As of now, the most recent live-action Resident Evil film that hit the screens was in 2021, and at present, Zach Cregger’s rumored movie seems to be the only one on the table. Over the years from 2002 to 2017, we had six live-action films plus a few animated ones mixed in. Considering this, it appears that the Resident Evil franchise is going through a bit of a lull at the moment.

It’s clear that the Resident Evil franchise continues to hold strong appeal for gamers everywhere. The recent remake of Resident Evil 4 received rave reviews from critics, which is impressive given how many consider the original game a gaming masterpiece. With the latest installment, Resident Evil Village, having been released in 2021, fans are eagerly waiting for updates on what’s coming next in the series. The 2023 animated film, Resident Evil: Death Island, set within the same narrative universe as the games, was well-received by both critics and fans. However, it fell between the main storylines and didn’t follow the events of Village.

Regarding Netflix and its series, it seems there are no plans for a revival at this time, leaving only one season available for viewers to enjoy. The show didn’t garner favorable responses from either fans or critics, which led Netflix to discontinue it. Unfortunately, the 2022 series represented one of Lance Reddick’s final roles, as he portrayed Albert Wesker, the antagonist in the franchise, before his passing.
