A Previously Canceled (Then Picked-Up) Series Was Just Canceled Again, And You Can Thank Amazon

As a dedicated viewer and follower of quality television, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment and frustration upon hearing the news that “American Rust” will not be getting a third season on Amazon. The rollercoaster journey this show took from being canceled at Showtime to being revived by Amazon, only to be canceled once again, is truly wild and disheartening for fans like myself.

Many excellent TV series, including “Our Flag Means Death,” “The Brothers Sun,” and “Walker,” are coming to an end or have been canceled this year. However, an even more surprising turn of events is when a canceled show is brought back to life, only to be canceled once again by the streaming platform that rescued it. This unfortunate fate has befallen “American Rust,” which was once highly regarded on Showtime. Sadly, it has been announced that there will be no third season for this series, and Amazon is to blame.

Based on Philipp Meyer’s 2009 novel “American Rust,” the 2021 television series of the same name featured Jeff Daniels portraying the police chief in a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town. In this drama, Daniels’ character spearheaded an investigation when the son of his lover was implicated in a murder. Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Alex Neustaedter, and Luna Lauren Velez were among the other stars. Initially canceled following its first season due to low ratings in 2022, Amazon’s Freevee later announced a second-season revival that was worth celebrating. However, according to Pennsylvania’s Tribune-Review, the series will not be renewed for a third season.

The crime drama “Broken Justice,” led by Jeff Daniels, aired on Amazon with the unconventional label an understatement. In June, it was renamed and moved from their free, ad-supported service Freevee to Prime Video. However, following rumors of Freevee’s closure, fans were left reeling when Amazon confirmed no changes would be made to the platform, making the cancellation of this popular series even more shocking.

For a fan, it’s truly anxiety-inducing to watch a series get canceled, then revived, only to be canceled once more. A recent example is the Netflix dramedy “Uncoupled,” which met its end after just one season, was given new life by Showtime, but unfortunately faced another cancellation before filming began for the second season.

Jeff Daniels is a valuable addition to the cast of “American Rust” due to his impressive acting background. He recently appeared in the Netflix miniseries “A Man in Full.” Although no information has been released about upcoming projects for Daniels, who gained fame from “The Newsroom,” it won’t be long before he secures another role.

Maura Tierney, who portrayed Grace Poe on the show and delighted us with her triumphant “new beginnings” toast during the final episode of the season, unfortunately won’t get to explore more of her character’s journey in that particular storyline. However, fans can look forward to seeing more of Tierney as she takes on a regular role in the upcoming Season 24 of “Law & Order.”

The cancellation of “American Rust” on Amazon will undoubtedly disappoint many viewers, and I share in their disappointment. I’m left pondering the reasons behind this decision. Nevertheless, fans can still savor both seasons of the show via a Prime Video subscription. Additionally, if you’re searching for alternative viewing options, check out the 2024 TV schedule.
