A Tropic Thunder Sequel Is Possible, Teases Justin Theroux

Oh boy, oh boy! If there’s one film that’s got me reminiscing about the good ol’ days of Hollywood satire, it’s none other than the riotous romp known as Tropic Thunder. And now, with whispers of a sequel floating in the air, my dear friends, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas Eve all over again!

15 years have passed since the cinema release of “Tropic Thunder”, yet a possible sequel has not been definitively dismissed by writer and executive producer, Justin Theroux. The movie boasted an all-star cast including Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Tom Cruise, among others, who brought to life a riotous ensemble of Hollywood personalities. Notably, Stiller also helmed the director’s chair and co-wrote the screenplay with Theroux and Ethan Cohen.

In an interview with ComicBook, Justin Theroux was queried about the prospect of creating a new Tropic Thunder movie. He hinted that he’s currently engaged in other upcoming ventures, but if the right concept for continuing Tropic Thunder surfaced, he’d eagerly seize the chance. As of now, it seems like the idea hasn’t materialized yet, but it’s evident that a sequel is still a possibility.

I have some stuff already churning that I’d love to do, but I’ll keep it a secret. Hollywood just gets funnier as the years go on. It never ceases to amaze me how navel-gazing it can be. There’s a million things — we’ve gone through so many movements in Hollywood that I think those would all be somehow in the mix. Listen, if an idea strikes me, like it struck Tim, where it’s like, ‘Oh, this could be a sequel,’ I’ll definitely do a sequel.

Tropic Thunder Cast is Down for a Sequel

For quite some time, Jack Black, famously known for his role as the drug-dependent character Jeff Portnoy in “Tropic Thunder”, has been secretly advocating for a sequel to the movie. In an interview with JOE back in early 2024, he admitted that he frequently brings up the idea of a potential sequel and a witty title to director Ben Stiller. Black jokingly mentioned: “Every time I see Ben Stiller, I say ‘Come on man, let’s do it! Arctic Lightning!'”

2023 found Robert Downey Jr. expressing his interest in a sequel to their film, along with collaborating with Tom Cruise again. It’s uncertain if Ben Stiller or other creative collaborators are equally enthusiastic about a follow-up, but given the high-profile cast, it seems improbable that the director would decline such an opportunity. The main challenge a sequel might face is resistance from contemporary audiences. Indeed, there are aspects of Tropic Thunder that have drawn criticism from some film critics. Nevertheless, Stiller remains unconcerned about these matters. As he shared on Twitter, “I take no blame for Tropic Thunder… I’m proud of it and the efforts everyone put into it.”
