A24 Creates Major Oscar Buzz With Recent Films Queer and The Brutalist

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-going under my belt, I must say that the upcoming releases from A24 have me absolutely thrilled! The dual release dates for Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ and Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist‘ are a testament to the studio’s commitment to bringing thought-provoking, award-worthy films to our screens.

The competition for the 97th Academy Awards is intensifying, as film studio A24 has scheduled releases for two highly anticipated films from the festival circuit: “Queer” directed by Luca Guadagnino and “The Brutalist.

At the 81st Venice Film Festival, both movies made their debut and were picked up by A24. Now, A24 has scheduled the release of these two films for an Oscar-eligible run in 2024 – specifically, “Queer” will have a limited release on November 27, 2024, and “The Brutalist” will follow with its own limited release on December 20, 2024. This strategic timing is to comply with the Academy Awards’ rules, which state that a film must screen for one week in either Los Angeles or New York at three daily showings during the same year to be eligible for submission.

The upcoming films “Queer” and “The Brutalist,” which are now being considered as potential award winners, certainly add excitement to the competition. Early reviews have been quite favorable for films such as the Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” as well as “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez,” both winners at Cannes. Additionally, films like Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” Robert Zemeckis’ “Here,” and Edward Berger’s “Conclave” are scheduled to be released soon and could potentially vie for awards as well.

2023 has an unusual number of sequels to Best Picture Academy Award nominees coming out: “Dune: Part Two”, “Mad Max: Fury Road’s” sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux”, and “Gladiator II”. Although “Mad Max: Fury Road’s” sequel flopped at the box office, these four films are still in contention for major Oscars. However, it is certain that Francis Ford Coppola’s film, “Megalopolis”, will not be a candidate for awards this year in the main Oscar categories.

Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews upon release, both “Queer” and “The Brutalist” have raised questions about A24’s ability to launch a full-fledged awards campaign for them. However, A24 has demonstrated success in this area, as shown by their Best Picture wins for “Moonlight” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Nevertheless, the studio faced criticism over its handling of “The Iron Claw,” another film that, like “The Brutalist,” premiered close to Christmas.

It appears that A24 may have been tardy in distributing screening copies of “The Iron Claw” to awards voters, leading some to believe they missed an opportunity for the film and its star Zac Efron, as it seems neither received a Best Actor or Best Picture nomination. With the positive reception garnered by both “Queer” and “The Brutalist,” let’s hope that A24 gives them their full support to potentially secure nominations in future award ceremonies.

Queer makes its debut in select theaters on November 27, 2024.
