A24 Hires Atlanta Director Hiro Murai to Direct Samurai Film Bushido

As a seasoned follower of the film industry, I can confidently say that A24 has once again hit a home run with their latest project. Hiro Murai, a director and producer who has worked alongside the prolific Donald Glover on numerous projects, is set to make his feature debut with an original samurai film titled “Bushido.

A24 consistently excels at discovering promising talent and pushing boundaries within the movie industry. They’re known for their daring approach, often spearheading groundbreaking projects. This fearless attitude appears to be ongoing, as they’re currently working on a second film by the controversial director of the analog horror movie “Skinamarink.” Now, this influential production company is venturing into new territory once more, as they’ve chosen to follow in the footsteps of a renowned filmmaker. According to Deadline, Hiro Murai, a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, is planning to direct his initial feature-length film. This original samurai movie will be financed by A24 in cooperation with producers and frequent collaborators Square Peg and 2AM.

Despite this being his first time directing a feature film, Murai boasts an impressive background in producing and directing, with numerous accolades to show for it. This Japanese-origin filmmaker earned Emmy nominations for his work on the FX series “Atlanta,” starring Donald Glover, whom he also collaborated with on multiple occasions. He served as director and executive producer for both of Glover’s Amazon Prime Video projects: the music film “Guava Island,” which featured Rihanna, and the recent Prime Video series “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” for which Murai received an Emmy nomination this year. Additionally, he has been nominated for his work as executive producer of FX’s culinary series “The Bear.” Simultaneously, Murai has contributed to popular projects like HBO’s “Barry” and Max’s “Station Eleven.

Murai’s achievements span beyond just film and television. Not only is he a renowned director and producer, but he has also collaborated extensively with Donald Glover on various music videos, including the Grammy-winning video for “This Is America” by Childish Gambino, which gained immense popularity with almost a billion views on YouTube. Other artists Murai has worked with to produce captivating music videos include Earl Sweatshirt and Chet Faker, among others. Now, Murai is transitioning from an exceptionally successful TV career to an intriguing movie project from one of the more innovative studios in the industry.

A Samurai Renaissance is Upon Us

As a fan eagerly waiting for more tales of samurai culture and feudal Japan, I can’t help but be thrilled about the upcoming high-stakes action film, “Bushido.” With the recent buzz surrounding FX’s drama, “Shōgun,” still lingering in the air, this timely announcement couldn’t be more fitting. Given that “Shōgun” made history by becoming the first Japanese-language project to win an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, it’s clear that audiences are ready for more samurai stories, and I can’t wait to see what “Bushido” has in store against the breathtaking backdrop of feudal Japan.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on “Bushido,” a masterpiece penned by none other than Henry Dunham, the talented mind behind “The Standoff at Sparrow Creek.” This film is backed by some heavyweight producers including Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen from Square Peg, as well as Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb, and David Hinojosa.
