As an ardent fan of Kiran Rao’s work, I must say this latest development in her career is nothing short of inspiring! The fact that her movie, Laapataa Ladies, was screened at the Supreme Court of India is nothing less than extraordinary. It’s not every day you get to see a filmmaker’s work being recognized and appreciated by such esteemed figures as Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and his team.
Kiran Rao’s film “Laapataa Ladies,” co-produced by Aamir Khan, was shown in a special event at India’s Supreme Court on August 9, 2024. This screening happened within the auditorium of the SC’s administrative building complex as part of their ongoing initiative to promote gender awareness. Kiran Rao posted pictures from the screening on social media and expressed her sincere thanks for the privilege.
As a seasoned lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I must say that attending exclusive events such as screenings is always a delight. Last night, I had the pleasure of being invited to a screening, and I was fortunate enough to be in the company of esteemed personalities like Khan, Rao, and CJI DY Chandrachud. The first photo shared by Kiran captured a memorable moment where we all posed together, making for a picture-perfect snapshot.
Rao openly showed great happiness and appreciation towards Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, his companion Ms. Kalpana Das, and everyone on the CJI team, expressing his sincere thanks to them all.

Yesterday, it was a tremendous privilege to showcase our film Laapataa Ladies at the Supreme Court. As you can see from these photos, I’m absolutely thrilled! I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to CJI DY Chandrachud, his partner Ms Kalpana Das, and the entire team of the CJI. This is an experience that I will cherish personally, and on behalf of our entire cast and crew, we are deeply thankful for this remarkable honor.
After the movie’s debut, the director conversed with Law Today on the courthouse grounds, expressing her joy and privilege to be present. When asked if she might create a courtroom drama inspired by her experience, Kiran enthusiastically stated she would enjoy delving into that genre.
She mentioned her pleasure at being in the courtroom and expressed a desire to spend an entire day there simply watching. She hinted that maybe one day, she might undertake a similar endeavor.
Lapataa Ladies stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam in the main roles. This movie premiered at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 8, 2023, before its theatrical release on March 1, 2024. The film received critical acclaim during its cinema screenings and surpassed other films after streaming on Netflix.
