In my own words, I confess to pondering a departure from the glamorous world of Bollywood to invest more time with my beloved Kiran Rao and our children. As I reminisce on this contemplated step, I recall Kiran’s response, which at the time seemed misguided, but now I understand its validity. She expressed her sentiments by saying, “You were born for cinema, and if you are leaving it behind, then you are abandoning life itself.” In response to her tears, I vowed that such an event wouldn’t occur, insisting she was mistaken in her interpretation.
In a recent chat on Rhea Chakraborty’s podcast, Aamir Khan shared that he considered leaving the film industry about three years ago. His aim was to devote more time to his family, a choice that left those close to him stunned and worried. Aamir went as far as to inform his production team, including his former wife Kiran Rao, that he no longer wished to carry on with the company and advised them to proceed without him. Looking back, Aamir remembered Kiran’s emotional reaction to his decision.
She made it clear that she was worried because his decision seemed like he was pulling away from them. Aamir tried to explain that his action stemmed from a need to prioritize family, but Kiran suggested that perhaps he wasn’t fully comprehending the circumstances. She elaborated by stating that leaving the film industry would mean discarding an essential aspect of himself, as cinema is deeply rooted in his identity. Furthermore, she emphasized that by departing, he would also be distancing himself from their common life and environment, effectively leaving them stranded as well.
He conveyed that she got quite emotional, and he attempted to console her by asserting she was wrong and it wouldn’t occur. But later on, he admitted she was right, even though he hadn’t realized it initially.
Apart from discussing the details of his decision, Aamir additionally spoke about his kids’ response when he announced his departure from films three years ago. He recounted their initial surprise, stating that they found it hard to believe he would truly leave the industry after being so deeply immersed for over 30 years. According to him, they said, “Dad, how can you quit films? You’ve been so passionate about it for the last three decades. This might just be an emotional moment and you won’t actually go through with it.”
On the career side of things, Aamir Khan made an appearance in 2022’s Laal Singh Chaddha, sharing the screen with Kareena Kapoor Khan, directed by Advait Chandan. The film had a modest run at the box office, but Aamir has continued to be involved in the industry. Lately, he has been co-producing Kiran Rao’s second directorial project, Laapataa Ladies, which received positive reviews. Currently, Aamir is working on his upcoming production, Sitaare Zameen Par, helmed by R.S. Prasanna and featuring Darsheel Safary and Genelia D’Souza in significant roles.
