The 2001 film Lagaan, a classic in Aamir Khan’s career, remains highly praised. Yet, during production, it is said that Aamir had several disputes and heated arguments with director Ashutosh Gowariker over what he perceived as illogical elements within the plotline. One point of contention was why his character sported a clean-shaven appearance given the story took place amidst a water shortage situation.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In a recent chat with Just Too Filmy, Aamir Khan confessed that he found himself puzzled by the clean-shaven look of his character, Bhuvan, in Lagaan, a movie set amidst a severe drought. He reminisced about questioning director Ashutosh Gowariker on how Bhuvan was able to shave under such water scarcity conditions.
Instead, it’s said that Ashutosh suggested disregarding those logical aspects. Aamir explained that this disagreement escalated into fierce debates, as he emphasized that shaving during those circumstances could provoke the villagers, considering the critical state they were in.
Ashutosh apparently recommended ignoring these logical points. According to Aamir, this difference of opinion sparked intense discussions, since Aamir argued that not shaving under such conditions might have enraged the villagers due to the dire situation they were facing.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve shared that I’ve always found myself perplexed by the rationale behind certain choices, and I remember vividly how Ashutosh responded when I voiced my doubts about them.
As per Aamir’s account, Gowariker merely expressed his preference for Aamir’s physical appearance in the movie and chose to overlook the reasoning behind it. Aamir conceded, despite feeling displeased about it initially.
To strike a balance, he started growing a light beard at night so it would be noticeable when he was on set. He mentioned that on occasions when he missed shaving the previous evening, he’d feel annoyed with himself. Yet, he hinted that this anxiety might have been more in his head, as he wasn’t certain if the viewers actually picked up on the detail.
In the year 2000, the movie “Lagaan” served as a significant milestone in Khan’s acting career. Afterwards, he continued his journey with “Dil Chahta Hai,” another groundbreaking film that was among the pioneers in Hindi cinema for portraying authentic stories about contemporary characters.
In a recent interview, Aamir spoke about this period in his career, noting that following the success of Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, the industry started to view him differently. Since they couldn’t think of a more suitable term, they eventually dubbed him as someone who strives for perfection.
