Aamir Khan’s PK was like Inception, recalls Rajkumar Hirani; director reveals what he did after spotting similarities with Christopher Nolan’s film

Known for creating hit movies like Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots, one of Bollywood’s most prominent directors, Rajkumar Hirani, recently shared in an interview that he had to alter the script for his film PK due to its striking resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s Inception. The original concept involved Aamir Khan playing an alien character.

When working on the script for PK, filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani found a strong resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s Inception after its release. To prevent any plagiarism concerns, he decided to revise the storyline. During an interview with Galatta Plus, he disclosed that the initial idea for PK involved a lead character capable of entering people’s minds and modifying their past encounters, thereby influencing their outlook on life.

Initially, they thought their concept was unique. But upon closer inspection, it turned out to be quite similar to Inception. As a result, they decided to revise the script in order to maintain its originality.

Hirani explained that after noticing resemblances with Inception, they decided to craft a fresh narrative where PK finds himself in a courtroom. “We initially began working on something different. Then, wow – Oh My God emerged, which also followed a similar path, involving a character going to court. So the second part of the story kept evolving,” he said.

The director shared that they tried various approaches for the second part of the movie, but couldn’t find a satisfactory conclusion. Originally, they shot it, but they weren’t completely content with the end product. Consequently, they had to re-film around 20 minutes of scenes, which extended the production duration.

During an interview with ETimes, Rajkumar shared that the movie’s core topic of faith and spirituality was intentionally left unmentioned prior to its premiere. He explained that they preferred the audience to uncover this aspect naturally, instead of disclosing it in advance.

Furthermore, Hirani pointed out that the secrecy surrounding the project had sparked numerous theories, causing some to believe the film might center around an extraterrestrial, an inebriated individual, or an odd personality portrayed by Aamir Khan.

In significant parts, the movie PK showcased actors like Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, and Sanjay Dutt. This film ended up becoming the top-earning Bollywood production of 2014.
