Abbott Elementary's Season 4 Crossover Has Seemingly Been Confirmed, And I'm Thrilled My Wild Guess Was Actually Right

As a hardcore gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the labyrinth of pop culture references and easter eggs hidden within my favorite video games, I can confidently say that this upcoming crossover between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is nothing short of a dream come true.

When news emerged at San Diego Comic-Con last summer about a secret crossover planned for Abbott Elementary‘s fourth season, my colleagues and I at TopMob convened in our press shooting room to speculate potential matches. Immediately, one series sprang to mind… however, it seemed almost impossible. As the title suggests, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia shares the same city as the school-focused network show and both shows are produced by the same parent company (ABC and FXX belong to The Walt Disney Company). Yet, they have vastly different comedic styles and tones.

Indeed, even with these differences, it appears as though the unlikely is unfolding: it seems an episode of Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia merging might actually occur.

This intriguing update originates from Rob McElhenney, the mastermind behind “It’s Always Sunny.” He’s been sharing captivating posts across his social media platforms. The first one popped up on Instagram, displaying a caption that says “Oh. Hello,” along with a photo of McElhenney alongside Charlie Day from “Sunny” and Quinta Brunson from “Abbott Elementary.” This image was captured on the set of her show, which is situated on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California.

Glancing at that photo might lead one to believe it’s simply a lighthearted photo opportunity, but Rob McElhenney’s tweet adds an air of mystery. Without a caption, the image features McElhenney, Day, and Brunson alongside It’s Always Sunny star and TV icon Danny DeVito, as well as Tyler James Williams and William Stanford Davis from Abbott Elementary.

While officially, the rumored crossover between seasons for Abbott Elementary, hinted at by Quinta Brunson some time back, hasn’t been confirmed yet, the idea certainly makes sense and I’m eagerly anticipating any developments on this front!

It’s unclear at this point exactly how extensive the crossover will be. Will characters from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” make a brief appearance in the cold opening of “Abbott Elementary,” or will there be an entire episode centered around their antics? Since season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny” is being developed, it’s tempting to hope that characters from “Abbott Elementary” might show up in future episodes of the FXX series. As exciting as this news is, I’m trying hard not to get too greedy about how it unfolds.
