Following its debut in 2023, The Last of Us was soon hailed as one of the top live-action video game adaptations. True to its source, The Last of Us isn’t shy about making significant alterations from the original narrative for a more suitable fit within the TV format. This trend is expected to continue in Season 2, which introduces Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, one of the new main characters in this popular drama series.
In a press conference about HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Neil Druckmann revealed that Abby’s background, which promises to deeply affect viewers, will be shown earlier in the series compared to how it unfolds in the game. For those who haven’t played “The Last of Us Part II,” the story splits between Ellie and Abby for half the game each, with players discovering Abby’s true motivations late in the game. However, viewers watching “The Last of Us” Season 2 in April won’t have to wait as long because her backstory will be presented earlier due to two key reasons mentioned by Druckmann.
We deliberately moved specific elements forward in the narrative for two main reasons. In the game, you personally take on the role of Abby, which creates an instant empathetic bond since you’re experiencing her journey – surviving, navigating through snow, battling infected creatures. By withholding certain details and maintaining a mystery about her past, we keep the story engaging. However, in the TV show, since you’re not playing as Abby, we can’t rely on this method, so we needed alternative ways to convey her backstory effectively. The context of the game gave us a shortcut for this purpose.
Neil Druckmann points out that if they had adhered to the game’s narrative timeline for revealing Abby’s backstory, viewers would have had to wait an extremely long time to grasp her unique motivations. However, in the HBO adaptation, fans will get insights into Abby’s past earlier rather than later, avoiding spoilers between seasons. The specific timing of this revelation for Season 2 remains undetermined, but a glimpse of young Abby was shown in the second trailer for ‘The Last of Us’.
Pedro Pascal Says He Had an “Unhealthy Mindset” Filming ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be reprising my Emmy-nominated role as Joel in Season 2 of The Last of Us. Five years on from the events of the first season, Joel finds himself grappling with a past filled with deceit and darkness. The upcoming episodes delve deep into a betrayal that Joel himself has made, a revelation hinted at in the Season 1 finale. Playing Ellie, the young girl turned survivor, is Bella Ramsey. In these new episodes, Joel will be forced to confront his past, an ordeal I can tell you was quite painful for me as an actor.
I felt thankful to be back, but simultaneously found it challenging to distinguish between my emotional response and the characters’ experiences – an unhealthy mix. In essence, I shared their suffering.”
Or simply,
“I struggled to differentiate between the emotions of the characters and my own feelings, creating an unhealthy emotional blend, and thus, I felt their pain.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that this upcoming season will see me engaging with a therapist named Gail, portrayed brilliantly by Catherine O’Hara. This character is unique to the HBO adaptation, and it appears we’ll delve deeper into Joel’s inner struggles compared to the game version. It’s evident why Pascal found it tougher to grapple with these issues this time around, unlike last season. Brace yourselves, fellow fans, because The Last of Us Season 2 promises to ramp up the emotional turmoil, a challenge set by the critically acclaimed first installment.
