At the CES 2025 event, Acer unveiled two fresh handheld gaming devices: the Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11. These additions broaden their collection of portable gaming devices as they continue to intensify their commitment towards mobile PC gaming. Additionally, Acer is introducing a new foldable Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller in tandem with the Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11.
The latest model of Nitro Blaze duo is equipped with AMD’s newest mobile processors, the Ryzen 8040 Series. These dual devices come with 16GB RAM as a default, and can also be customized to include up to 2TB of internal storage.
As a tech enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11. These bad boys pack AMD’s Ryzen 7 8840HS – a top-tier processor that promises a substantial performance leap compared to the AMD Z1 Extreme processors commonly found in today’s leading handheld Windows PCs. The upgraded processors boast up to 39 total AI TOPS, significantly amplifying the already impressive performance capabilities of devices equipped with their predecessors. Acer is so confident about these new devices that they claim they will “smoothly support AAA gaming.
The Nitro Blaze 8 and Nitro Blaze 11 boast touch screens measuring 8.8 inches and 10.95 inches respectively, with the former being WQXGA and the latter WQXGA as well. It’s worth noting that these aren’t OLED displays; however, they offer a swift refresh rate of 144 Hz. Acer has combined these screens with AMD’s Radeon 780M graphics card, a GPU that leverages both AMD’s Radeon and FidelityFX Super Resolution technologies to deliver smooth, upscaled gaming performance.
Among the two models, the larger one, known as Nitro Blaze 11, stands out with detachable controllers, a feature initially popularized by Nintendo Switch and so far only duplicated by Lenovo in the handheld PC domain. This design allows it to be utilized both as a portable device and, in a way, a desktop. In contrast, the Nitro Blaze 8 does not have detachable controllers, but both models share Hall Effect triggers and sticks. These features protect them against the common issue of “stick drift” that may occur with non-Hall Effect controllers over time.
These devices offer swift wireless connectivity through Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Moreover, they provide two USB-C ports, one of which is a USB 4 port that enables rapid wired connection with data transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps, and the other serves for charging purposes and attaching additional accessories using USB 3.2 technology.
In a convenient foldable design, Acer’s latest Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller offers enhanced portability benefits. Compatible with both iOS and Android devices, it connects directly via USB-C, providing mobile gamers an edge over Bluetooth controllers due to minimal input delay. Furthermore, it provides 18W pass-through charging, allowing players to continue gaming without interruptions even when battery levels are low.
Among its many advantages, the Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller stands out for being able to support devices with displays up to 8.3-inches, making it suitable for smaller tablets such as the iPad Mini. This is significant because there have been limited options in the market for mobile controllers compatible with tablets – especially from well-known brands. While GameSir’s G8+ controller is an option, it uses Bluetooth, which can lead to input lag. In contrast, Acer’s new controller features a hard-wired USB-C connection, appealing to competitive gamers or anyone seeking the fastest possible response times for games where quick reactions are crucial.
Just a few months ago, Acer entered the portable gaming market by introducing its first-ever device, the Nitro Blaze 7, in September. The rapid succession of these three announcements hints at the company’s ambitious aspirations within the realm of mobile gaming.
The Acer Nitro Blaze 8 will retail at $899 USD or €999 EUR, while the Acer Nitro Blaze 11 will be priced at $1,099 USD or €1,199 EUR. Both models are expected to hit the market sometime in the second quarter of this year.
The Acer Nitro Mobile Gaming Controller, priced at approximately $70 USD or €90 EUR, is scheduled to hit the market a bit sooner than expected, possibly within the first quarter of this year. Keep an eye out for further announcements.
