As a fashion enthusiast with a penchant for the unconventional and a soft spot for the nostalgic, I must say that Acne Studios’ SS25 collection left me both intrigued and reminiscent of my childhood playroom. The vibrant juxtaposition of stark minimalism and bursts of colorful chaos was a sight to behold, much like finding my old toy box after a dusty summer in the attic.
As a fan, I was captivated by how Acne Studios showcased their SS25 line in a pristine white space adorned with vibrant sculptures crafted from everyday items, masterfully created by Philadelphia artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase. In his own words, he emphasized that the ideas of “comfort” and “vulnerability,” along with living fearlessly within one’s personal space, were at the heart of this installation’s design for the collection. The themes of elevated shoulders, voluminous silhouettes, and expansive waistlines certainly convey a feeling of amplification and softness, making each piece truly stand out.
The performance started with a snug beige outfit, one of the simpler designs crafted in breathable, skin-tone materials that suggested a sense of minimalism. However, the show took an unexpected turn, adorning the models with exaggerated padded tailoring, like a gray two-piece suit that seemed to have been inflated and embossed with reptile patterns. This was followed by rigid, voluminous jeans and skirts, then sleek, structured leather sets, which collectively gave an eerie impression of rubber clothes designed for dolls. Later, bulky knits and oversized checks emerged, as if they had been digitally enhanced to gigantic proportions. Some outfits featured exaggerated chest pieces and cartoonish shoulder straps that resembled paper doll dress-up books.
Towards the end of the fashion show, garments adorned with similar knotted trimmings made their appearance on the catwalk, evoking the rustic woolen knits that were part of the collection earlier. Amid the nostalgic references to toy-inspired fashion, a rebellious blend of patterns and asymmetrical designs marked the pieces, giving an impression that the models hastily emerged from a closet, haphazardly gathering polka-dot and plaid fabrics and quickly tying them into makeshift dresses.
Just as my gaming setup reflects my unique personality with all its colorful, customized elements, it seems these items take on a life of their own, mirroring the essence of their owner. Transforming a corner of Paris into a playground for grown-ups, this space screams authenticity and unapologetic self-expression – a testament to the power of personal belongings in shaping one’s identity.
