‘Actors should have some discretion’: Here’s why The Royals star Ishaan Khatter feels large entourage is burden for entire crew

Actor Ishaan Khatter shares a balanced perspective on the debate about actors having big entourages. He doesn’t fully agree or disagree, instead suggesting that each artist should have the freedom to decide for themselves. In his recent show “The Royals,” this issue is comically tackled, highlighting how expanding support teams can significantly increase production costs.

In an interview with PTI, Ishaan Khatter mentioned that one person shouldn’t have a group so big that it causes problems for the whole film crew. He also pointed out that this subject could be humorously addressed in a playful, witty manner.

Drawing upon his diverse set of experiences, he opened up about how these have fluctuated significantly from one project to another. For example, during the filming of ‘A Perfect Couple’, he handled everything single-handedly without any personal aid. Conversely, on other production sites, actors are commonly accustomed to receiving substantial assistance, which he humorously acknowledged can sometimes be quite entertaining.

At present, Netflix offers the series titled “The Royals.” In this show, Ishaan Khatter portrays Aviraaj Singh, a reluctant contemporary prince, while Bhumi Pednekar plays Sophia Shekhar, an ambitious CEO of her own startup. The two characters form an alliance to transform Aviraaj’s ancestral mansion into a luxury bed-and-breakfast getaway.

Speaking as a lifestyle aficionado, in episode 2 of “The Royals,” Ishaan Khatter’s character offers a witty observation about the lavish ways of his royal family. During a chat with his younger brother, brilliantly played by Vihaan Samat, he humorously compares his entourage to an election campaign rally. In retort, Vihaan’s character defends his staff, asserting that they handle tasks beyond the capabilities of others in their circle.

Ishaan Khatter expressed that when it comes to his acting work, he prefers not to have a manager on set with him. Instead, he enjoys collaborating closely with the production crew and feeling like an integral part of the team. While he doesn’t necessarily advocate for or against having support staff, he believes that actors making their own decisions in these situations would be most beneficial.

Vihaan Samat, known for his performances in Vikramaditya Motwane’s CTRL and Netflix’s Mismatch, pointed out that while The Royals takes inspiration from hit series like The Crown and Bridgerton, it stands out with its strong ties to Indian culture.

The actor pointed out that “The Royals” combines aspects from numerous current series, including period, location, character development, and contemporary elements, all set against an Indian backdrop. What makes this show distinctive, he noted, is its humorous approach and creative handling of the presented topics.
