Adam Cruces Explores the Frontier of ‘Necessary Evil’

As a connoisseur of art with a penchant for the profound and the picturesque, I found myself utterly captivated by Adam Cruces‘ exhibition, “Necessary Evil”, at Blue Velvet Projects. The rich pastels and sculptures transported me from the bustling streets of Zurich to the serene American plains, a journey that seemed both familiar and fantastical.

Blue Velvet Projects recently unveiled a fresh solo exhibition titled “Necessary Evil” by artist Adam Cruces, which is open for viewing until October 26, 2024. Through the use of vibrant pastels and sculptures, this exhibit delves into the complex bond between humans and nature, evoking sensations of peace and peril. As the boundaries between inner and outer realms blur, Cruces sends a signal from the expansive American prairie.

The artist infuses Swiss settings with a hint of Texas charm, evoking rural vistas, farming life, and Western movie motifs. The gallery’s white walls are adorned with pastel depictions of deserts and mountains, serving as frames for fantastical landscapes. Iconic symbols of American heritage, like cowboy hats, anvils, and apples, appear suspended in their dreamlike settings, frozen in a sequence of slow-motion stills.

In harmony with pastel hues and showcased artworks, this exhibition presents a variety of sculptures. From scythes embedded in stones to a swamp dweller in ghillie suit, fixated on viewers, Cruces’ creations evoke mythological echoes while spinning a fresh tale. Another collection includes oversized mirrors embellished with water lilies. Regardless of whether they are transparent, tinted, or completely painted over, these mirrors straddle the line between personal introspection and the potential danger of self-obsession akin to Narcissus.

Cormac McCarthy expresses the idea that one can struggle to see things objectively when too deeply involved in them, in his novel ‘No Country for Old Men’. Cruces echoes this thought in a current context, applying and adapting it to the pressing issue of our common environment.
