Adam Sandler Celebrates ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Starting Production: “We’ve Only Just Begun”

As a lifelong fan who grew up with Adam Sandler‘s comedic brilliance, the news of Happy Gilmore 2 feels like a sweet slice of nostalgia served fresh. I remember the original movie, filled with laughter and heart, making my teenage years a bit brighter. The thought of revisiting this iconic character, complete with his unconventional golf swings and Boston Bruins jersey, sends me down memory lane to the days of VHS tapes and dial-up internet.

Adam Sandler is ready to take a swing at Happy Gilmore 2 for Netflix.

On Monday, it was announced that the second installment of the comedy movie following up from the 1996 film is all set to begin production. Kyle Newacheck (‘Murder Mystery’) will be directing the film based on a script co-written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy. The initial Universal Pictures film was directed by Dennis Dugan, who has also been at the helm for other successful movies starring Sandler like ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Grown Ups’.

Netflix has started producing ‘Happy Gilmore 2’,” announced their official account, which was once on Twitter, on Monday. The post featured a picture from the set, displaying a resemblance of a Boston Bruins hockey jersey, similar to what Sandler’s character wore in the original film.

Adam Sandler posted on Instagram for his 58th birthday, sharing the same image and writing, “It’s not over yet. As I see it, we’ve merely scratched the surface.” This phrase is reminiscent of a line he uses in the original movie towards his rival Shooter McGavin, portrayed by Christopher McDonald.

Details regarding the plot of the upcoming sequel have yet to be disclosed. The original film, Happy Gilmore, featured Adam Sandler in the role of a struggling hockey player who unexpectedly excels at golf due to his powerful swings.

Earlier this year, McDonald accidentally revealed that a sequel for “Happy Gilmore” was being planned. A few months later, the project was officially confirmed, and Netflix announced on their social media platforms in May: “Happy Gilmore is making a comeback! Adam Sandler will once again play his unforgettable character in an upcoming movie that will be available on Netflix.

In recent interviews, Sandler announced that Benny Safdie is set to appear in the upcoming film “Happy Gilmore 2“, and NFL player Travis Kelce will make a guest appearance. Additionally, McDonald is returning to play his previous character, Shooter.

Recently, I couldn’t help but feel pumped up when I chatted with The Hollywood Reporter about diving back into my beloved character again!

Initially, Tim Herlihy and I conceived an idea, and as we discussed it further and began to develop scene by scene, it grew stronger and we became very confident about the movie. We’re satisfied with its current state and this is an exhilarating period for us. Honestly, I can’t explain how our minds decided to pursue this project. It just seemed like a natural progression.
