Adam Sandler Explains Why Now Was Right Time to Revisit ‘Happy Gilmore’: “It Just Kind of Happened”

As a die-hard Adam Sandler fan with over 25 years of his comedic journey under my belt, I can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store with the upcoming release of “Happy Gilmore 2.” The original movie was the anthem of my teenage years, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting this sequel since the day it went off the airwaves.

As a die-hard Adam Sandler fan, I can’t help but get excited about his upcoming Netflix project, the stand-up special titled “Love You,” dropping next week. However, what truly has me jumping for joy is the prospect of a future Netflix release: none other than “Happy Gilmore 2.” Can’t wait to see the Chili Dog-wielding golfer back in action!

In May, Netflix officially announced that they were producing a follow-up movie to the 1996 film, following statements by Adam Sandler and his co-star Christopher McDonald in different interviews indicating that this project was under development.

Currently, Sandler is traveling to share his new release titled “Love You“. In a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show“, Sandler has shared some insights about “Happy Gilmore 2” that’s coming up. On the show, he mentioned that filming will start in just a few weeks in New Jersey. The movie will feature actual golfers and even a cameo by Travis Kelce of the Chiefs, who is both a fan of Sandler and expressed his willingness to be part of the film by saying he’d do “anything” for it.

Sandler expressed his satisfaction with the upcoming sequel, stating, “We put in a lot of effort on the script. We didn’t want to disappoint anyone. Fans have been urging me for years to make Happy Gilmore 2. Initially, I was hesitant, fearing it might not meet expectations. However, now we’re genuinely thrilled about it. We’ve worked tirelessly on the script and are aiming to create a film that you’ll enjoy.”

Regarding Kelce, Sandler stated, “We’ve got an appealing opportunity for Travis,” and noted that he had picked up on the Chiefs tight end expressing interest in joining the project.

“Sandler mentioned that Kelce will drop by,” he said. “He’s an extremely friendly person. I assure you, you’d find him delightful in real life. He’s quite a tall, good-looking fellow. He’s got a great sense of humor and is incredibly charming. He’s both athletic and hilarious.”

After nearly three decades since the initial movie, Sandler felt it necessary to “hone” his unique “jump-skip-and-swing” style reminiscent of Happy Gilmore.

“I gave it a go not too long ago. Given how straightforward it appeared, I decided to give it a whirl. And guess what? I took a tumble, laughing about it. Lying there for a bit, someone brought me a refreshing lemonade, and I spent some time lounging on the ground, savoring the drink. But don’t worry, I’ll be back in action soon. When the moment arrives to take my shot, remember, I’m all about gaming!”

Sandler additionally shared with IndieWire that his Uncut Gems collaborator, Benny Safdie, will be taking on an exciting part in Happy Gilmore 2.

At the premiere of “Love You” in New York, Sandler shared with The Hollywood Reporter his reasons for remaking the original movie. He explained that he and co-writer Herlihy discovered an opportunity to continue the story.

“Adam Sandler mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that he and his friend Tim Herlihy conceived an idea, which grew stronger as they discussed it scene by scene. They are now confident about the movie and find themselves in an exhilarating phase. He admitted that it’s hard to explain how the decision to make this project came about; it just seemed like a natural progression.”

In 2015, Happy Gilmore director Dennis Dugan suggested to THR that a sequel seemed unlikely.

“Dugan stated something like, ‘It’s hard to believe he’d do such a thing, but in Tinseltown, nothing is impossible.'”

Sandler is teaming up once more with the Safdie brothers on the film titled “Love You“, marking Josh Safdie’s first attempt as a comedy special director.

In explaining why Sandler chose Josh Safdie for his initial project as director, it’s clear that he believed him to be an ideal match for the role.

As a huge comedy enthusiast, I frequently attend his performances. We’ve grown quite close over time, and I must say, he’s nothing short of brilliant! When given the opportunity to collaborate with such a genius, who wouldn’t jump at the chance? The experience was nothing short of enjoyable, and he brought fresh ideas to the table that I would have never thought of. I’m thrilled we were able to create something together! (This statement is paraphrased from what Adam Sandler said about his collaborator in THR.)
