Adrian Brody Addresses AI Controversy in ‘The Brutalist’

Adrien Brody, the Oscar-winning actor from The Pianist, has made a comeback in the limelight with his lead role in Brady Corbet’s period drama titled The Brutalist. This film, nominated for ten Academy Awards, has been facing some criticism lately because of claims that AI was utilized during its production. However, Brody assures us that while some aspects like voices and accents were subtly adjusted using AI, none of the dialogue’s originality was altered.

The actor, Brody, spoke with Vanity Fair, and shortly afterward, the subject of artificial intelligence arose in the form of a question. In his interview, Brody clarified that no changes were made to the final product, only some lines in Hungarian were run through an AI algorithm. Additionally, he acknowledged dialect coach Tanera Mashall, whose work may have been affected by the online allegations.

To begin with, I’m a child of Hungarian parents who grew up speaking Hungarian at home. I even incorporated some unscripted Hungarian curse words into the dialogue. I’m glad Brady was able to provide clarity in his comments. It appears that his post-production process mainly focused on lines spoken in Hungarian. The dialect, however, remains untouched; it has been meticulously crafted with our exceptional dialect coach, Tanera Marshall. Everyone involved worked tirelessly on this aspect, and we all recognize the effort required.

In this common post-production phase, there’s no automated system in place that performs tasks previously done by humans. We’re all familiar with this fact.

Apart from praising the actor, he also credits director Corbet as an extremely considerate and thorough filmmaker. Recently, Director Corbet clarified that AI was only employed to perfect the Hungarian dialogue in the project.

Adrien and Felicity’s acting styles are uniquely their own. For several months, they collaborated with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to polish their accents. Respeecher technology was employed during post-production, focusing on Hungarian dialogue, primarily to fine-tune specific vowels and characters for precision… The intention was to maintain the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity’s performances in another language, not to distort or replicate them. This process was carried out with utmost respect for their craft.

Brody is considered a top contender in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category at the upcoming Oscars, which take place on March 2nd. This prestigious event features notable films such as “Conclave,” “Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “A Complete Unknown” competing for awards. However, “Emilia Pérez,” with its 13 nominations, has faced setbacks after an investigation into the past of its lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, uncovered some damaging information that could potentially end her career. The same fate may be looming for “The Brutalist” due to recent AI-related controversies; only time will tell if it suffers similar consequences.
